Blaemire "402" Last viewed: 3 hours ago

So, I picked up this drum from last years Chicago Show. It was wearing Rogers hardware, and was wrapped in BDP. The shell is almost 6.5" deep, so I wanted to convert it to a Blaemire 402. Jerry and I had always talked about how sweet it would be to have an entire original Blaemire kit with Flat Imperial lugs, ala a Clubdate kit. The closest he came was building a Supersensitive with all Ludwig hardware, including flat Imperial lugs. It was always my favorite of his snare builds.

I built this drum as a tribute to my good friend. I have a couple J/M Blaemire green snares, but my original Blaemire snare developed a crack in the snare side of the shell, so I had been looking for a replacement. I finally found a set of flat Imperial lugs and had them chromed. Stripped the wrap, sanded the shell. I slightly widened the snare beds and finished off the shell with the same rattle can lacquer that Jerry always used. The only Rogers hardware I kept was the muffler, as it is a three hole application, didn't want any extra holes. There is some slight splay of the tension rods, doesn't really bug me. I may slightly altrer the hoops to address this, but it tunes up fine, and sounds great!

Thanks for the inspiration Jerry!

Greg,

Outstanding drum man! I have been so tempted to strip my Blaemires of the black wrap and do whatever I have to to restore the original green shells. That one came out beautiful and I'll bet it sounds great too. Sound file!

Nice build as always.

You finally found some Flat Imps. Great.

Where did they come from?

They are getting rarer all the time.

Drum looks great.

Jerry was always saying that the 6.5 Blae shells

were calling out to have Flat Imps.

He was right.

Greg, I have a feeling that if you swap out the hoops for older ones, the splay goes away! I think the holes are in closer on vintage hoops. Another solution would be, go single flange COB hoops with clips! Old-school.

Hey John,

I got lucky because the wrap came off easily, which is not always the case. I thought you were thinking of selling the kit?

Hey Scott,

Remember that guy on DFO? I ended up buying them from him, he still has 10 left.

Bingo John!

When I first got this drum, I noticed it had 1.6mm hoops on it. So, I installed them on my '79 Supra 402 to hear what it sounded like, since Ludwig used to install them back then. I just took those hoops off the Supra, and have installed them back onto the Blaemire, no splay. Plus, I dig on the sound with the 1.6mm hoops.

Hey Mario,

It sounds great! I'm running an Amb X on the batter, with some Puresound 30's. The 1.6mm hoops have a great feel to them.
