Buddy Rich- the best recording(s) to buy? Last viewed: 5 minutes ago

Loading...

I've always been more of a Krupa man, but I recently have been (awe)struck by the tenacity of Buddy Rich.

So what are your toughts on the "must have" albums / tracks of Buddy? I am specifically looking for tracks that highlight him in a full band setting. Not really interested in the "battle" albums nor a collection of drum solos. Something available on Itunes would be A+ as I've become something of a 21st century digital boy.

I really enjoyed his recording of Mercy mercy mercy, so perhaps someone can lead me to an album in that vein.

Wow that's a tall order!!

They're all pretty much stellar, but things like Best Coast off of Stick It,

Time Check off of The Roar of 74', the entire Live in London from Ronnie Scotts club, that has Dancing Men, Time Being.......

I had the good forune to see Buddy close to 40 times over the years and the live versions like most things are always the best. Having said that, try and find the live stuff on Itunes like, In A Mellow Tone recorded live in the early 80's.

The Porgy and Bess medley jumps out too, pretty much the whole Swingin' New Big Band album.

The live version of Just In Time is a great cut..... the list goes on.

I know as Buddy said many times, every drummer out there owes Gene the biggest debt of all for bring the drummer out front, and he was also just a really nice man who put on an amazing preformance very time he got behind the set.

As we all know very very different in terms of technique, but you still have to appreciate what Gene and Buddy brought to the art in their individual styles.

We'll most likely never see anyone of Buddy's talent, drive, technique humor and passion in a very long time if ever.

You'll have fun running all these tunes down and won't, like all of the Buddy fans out there get tired of them, actually you'll play more and more as times goes on.

Enjoy!!

Yes the drum battle albums are great recordings, buuuuuut, Buddy really did, as a contemporary big band drummer of the time said, "Buddy just put them in his back pocket, they're not in the same league!!"

Now I know that certainly is personal preference IMHO and judgement so please no hate mail singer .

I tend to gravitate to the swinging big band sound and the punch that Buddy kicked the band with, but I also agree if you want to become a true "Buddyaphile" you really should get those drum battle albums but I always went for the full band sound first.

Also cruise the used record shops, I can remember going to the used record shops to find the out of print copies of the Liberty, Groove Merchant recordings of the 60's & 70's.

And lastly go out and get the early stuff with Buddy as a band leader from like 1946 on when Frank Sinatra gave Buddy the dough to start his own big band, they're fun and you'll catch Buddy with his vocal skills at the mike Walking a real hipster!

Big band isn't my father's cup of tea, but when I started playing drums, he bought these for me:

"Swingin' New Big Band" (live at the Chez): West Side Story Medley always slays.

"Together Again for the First Time" with Mel Torme: They turn "Lady Be Good" into a tribute to Ella ... Mel scats and Buddy answers ... smokin'!!!
