Calf and Goat Skin Questionnaire Last viewed: 1 second ago

From mcjnic

This is a little video demo I did to shine a bit of light as to what the issues are. I believe the flesh hoops are being shipped undersized and that is the root of this.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBIO8-6rh0E&feature=channel_pageThe 12 inch calf skin head came in today. It's tight, but it does go over the 12 inch tom shell on my little jazzer and it does sound ok. The 14 calf skin also fits the jazzer floor tom pretty good. So, I've got one kit with two toms that have calf heads. I've got the 13 and 16 calf skin heads that don't fit any of the three kits. I can get them over the toms of one kit but they are extremely tight and really don't sound out.Out of four heads, I've got two I can use. That's not good.

I'm assuming you got these from Rob Cook's Rebeats site....has he been able to shed any light on this problem? I'd contact him and send him the video link to show him what the issue is.

I've spoken a few times with him on this but haven't lately due to the 4th of July weekend. He's more than likely busy. I'm sure this will work out...I hope.

I just picked up an Earthtone for my 18" kick. Real nice head, much thicker than I would have thought. The instructions say you might have to tune it a couple times because it will stretch. Put it on and tuned it a little high to stretch it, tons of resonance, I might have to put a felt strip on it. I'll mess with it more tomorrow.

Got it at the drum shop I frequent. Their stock is low on Earthtones, they are having a hard time getting them also. I couldn't get all the sizes I needed so I thought I would check one out for my kick.

Well after letting the head seat overnight I just went and checked on it, completely loose. Tuned it up again and played it for a while and I am amazed! Great tone, deep and a little boomy, I'll still have to mess with it. Overall great head. To me there doesn't seem to be a big difference between goat and calf except the price. Also I think this plays a lot different than plastic, much more responce. Me thinks I have to put one on the front.

Did your local store have a couple of 13's and 16's?

From what I understand, calf is supposed to be more durable overall than goat skin heads. Since I have never played or owned either I am only going by what I've read and heard over the years. Someday if budget allows.....
