I didn't know their was a drum show this weekend in St Charles IL,(Friend told me about it earlier in the week) it was advertised as a music show but it was all guitars and drums, not as big as the may show, but cool none the less. I went to set out this morning with $500 in my pocket, (its the only way I can control my OCD) I got there right when the show opened, and as I walked in, the first booth I came across, on the table was a 70 WMP Sling 10 lug Buddy Rich snare, I said to myself I must be dreaming, I looked at the tag, $500, PERFECT! exactly the amount I brought, I no sooner reached in my pocket to pull out the cash, and a man taps me on the shoulder, and says sorry sir, that snare is not for sale, guess who that person was? none other than Steve Maxwell himself, he bought the drum from another vendor before the show opened, I said Steve, you know how long I've been looking for this snare? he smiled and packed it away under his table, no wonder Steve is the master, he finds all the nice drums, that one slipped out right under my nose, I knew it was too good to be true. pack to hunting again. We have similar luck,....Drove by a D506 in the music shop window at least twice a week,...saved for a few months, when i got the OK from the wife to spend it,..had to wait for the snow we had last winter to stop before I could go,..the next day I went down all excited and it was sold the day before !! I took one last look as I walked out the door and drove away !! It had a Cenntenial badge and matched my kit !!
.....76/#XK9207 Phonic Sound Machine D454/D-505 snares !i
Steve's a little slow so ......I bet if you would have gave him a shot in the knee and stuck the cash in his pocket and grabbed the drum, you would have made good your escape........kidding.
There was a guy last year selling a COB Ludwig super 400 pre serial badge on CL for 475.The drum looked really good in the pics.I called him up..arrange a meeting and sped off, cash in hand.I thought we had a deal.I get to the meeting spot, and he dosen't show. After waiting around 45 min.,I call him,and he says to me...some guy came to his house..and offered him 480...so he took the money, and gave the guy the drum.I still wonder if it was sellers remorse.DOH

Why was there a price of $500 on the Slinger drum if not for sale?

I myself have pretty much been seeking the same exact drum, or one along similar lines, a Spitfire, perhaps a 2-1, Super Sound King, Sound King, or the TDR in WMP, and circa late '70's, to 1980 or so. I want that Snare to go with my WMP Barrett Deems Set.
In general, Steve's often a "buy and sell" kind of guy, very negotiable, and it's a fun way that he makes money. to perhaps support his "addicition" for the love of everything Drums.
In fact, years ago around 2001-2002 at the Vintage Show, I bought an ansolutely spotless, and perfect-prisitine Late 70's 5x14 Ten Lug COB Buddy Rich TDR from Steve for the tidy, and very fair sum IMO of $300.
Steve was originally asking $350, but I think due to personal like of me, Steve said OK to $300. And I still have that Drum, Right now it's entombed in plastic, and a box. On occasion, I whip it out, swap it into my set for a day or two, then back in her box she goes, being replaced either by an NOS COB 5x14 Krupa Sound King, or 6x14 prototype COB Spitfire that belonged to Barrett.
Only thing that was unoriginal on the Drum was a set of Pearl Snares that were put on somewhere along the line, and shortly after that purchase, I lucked into a ebay seller auctioning off the correct Slingy Snare Wires in box, and caught the auction closing for $25. So now she's all original, and correct.
Another time Steve offered me a very beautiful 1 ply Artist in WMP, but it was from an earlier era-age (1960's with Gold-Black Badge), and was an incorrect color, and era match for my BD Drumset.
About the only thing I can say about such a Drum that Steve had, is I'd probably be correct that Steve has been personally looking for a clean one of these for himself to go with a certain set of his, or a good friend-customer of his had a special request of Steve to find him such a drum?
I know about 1-1/2-2 years ago, Steve had a Louis Bellson Endorser Badged Slingy Spitfire in WMP, an absolute drop dead beauty of a drum, and I lusted and drooled over that one. The asking price on his website at the time listed the drum at a cool 4 Grand! Sadly, a bit too rich for my blood.
Best of luck with your search. I'm sure if you contact Steve, and personally ask his assistance in finding another such similar Drum, he would probably help you find one. Steve's always been a first class fella, and a gentleman. Mark D.
