Anyone here like copper snare drums?

The reason for the post is that I've never played a copper snare. I currently have bronze, brass, and ludalloy snares as far as metals go...so let's just say I'd have to be super convinced before I'd pick one up...

The Pearl Smitty Smith Model is a great drum but not made anymore as Smitty Smith has moved on to another drum company. The Craviotto/AK Drums copper shell 5.5x14 and 6.5x14 drums are also amazing but that run has sold out so you'll have to peruse Ebay or call Craviotto as they may be able to accommodate you...ask for Joe Kenney and feel free to use my name if you don't know Joe.

I played a 4x14 DW copper snare that I really liked. It wasn't the sound I was after at the time, but for the right application, I wouldn't hesitate buying one.

I have tapped around on a few, they sounded more like a bronze drum to me,the only reason to get one if you already have a bronze is if you find one that sounds different enough or you want an unusual size,I don't know how much they cost these days but the prices def went up in the last few years along with the price of copper.

Interesting side note,10 or more years ago there were taiwanese copper sling snares on the market,at the end they were going for 85.00,but were nice snares with cheap throws and butts, now they are bringing 175.00 plus.

I've heard that copper is sort of dry. Since I have a hammered bronze, I imagine it might be a similar sound...

They sound like bronze, but "darker". If you've played a bronze snare and a brass snare, you can think of a bronze snare as sounding "halfway between" a brass and a copper snare.

I have a 12x5 hammered copper snare that I use mostly for musicals. It's beautiful, but definitely has a specific sound.

Nice comparison, that makes sense!

thanks for the feedback! I imagine they're cool drums to play. I may eventually add one in the mix...maybe even a 4" depth for something different...

In fact, I may look into a 4x14 at some point. I heard JR play one that sounded great actually...had a big sound to be only a 4 inch shell.
