Dilemma: Modify WFL Speedking, or find another... Last viewed: 34 minutes ago

Hey all,

Decided to pursue another SpeedKing as, after studying lots of pictures, I have decided mine is wrong for my early 70s wide hoops.

Here is my WFL:

I am sure I could trade for a proper wide hoop one, but it is a bit of a c$%p shoot as this one doesn't sqeak, and is in great functional condition. Might trade and end up with one that isn't in as decent shape. Also, have to deal with shipping etc.

OR.

I could take mine to a local machining shop and have them file those tabs back.

I am new to vintage drums, is that blasphemy? Thanks. Be honest. :)

My WFL Speedking has the same size tabs as yours and my Ludwig Speedking has tabs that are 1 1/4 inch. I'd get a different pedal and work at getting rid of as many squeeks as possible or get it rebuilt or buy one of the new ones. I have one of those also and I'm very happy with it. I wouldn"t mess with altering the one you have.

I don't see anything wrong with having the tabs cut back on yours. :)

I am a little confused (which, of course, is not unusual). Your tabs at 3/4" and Gerald says his are 1 1/4". Do you need to shorten your 3/4" tabs? Seems like there won't be anything left to grab the hoop. Is the issue that the pedal sits too far from the bass drum head causing the beater to strike at an angle? If so, I have seen a lot of guys put a reverse bend in the beater shaft to allow the beater to contact the head squarely. Perhaps I am just not understanding the dilemma though.

Here's a pic showing the difference. Not my pic I lifted it from the net. Newer plate on the right.

Thanks Glenn, that pic sums it up perfectly.

Yeah, the beater hits at a poor angle. Love how the pedal feels though.

I see. I would suggest either trying the angled beater option or replacing the pedal as opposed to cutting the existing one. The reason I say this is that the pedals are fairly plentiful and not that expensive. Someone here will probably want yours.

Let me see if I am understanding this "Dilemma" (The new current buzzword on VDF)!LoLoLoLo

I have a Speed King on which I cannot slide the tabs all the way underneath the hoop, because the linkage hits the head when operated, even when tightened down firmly. I have to "back it off" so it's only clamped about halfway on in order to get the necessary clearance for the linkage to not hit the head. If I understand it correctly moonweasel, you are having the opposite problem, where yours doesn't go on far enough, thereby causing the beater to have to "over-extend" itself?

In my case, will cutting the tabs shorter help this problem? Honestly, I cannot tell the difference by studying the picture FFR428 posted. By the way, I am using 1.5" wide hoops.

EDIT: I see the difference now. The one on the left (older) has "tabs" on the side that will prevent it from going too far on the hoop, while the one on the right (newer) doesn't. I must have a newer one.

Any suggestions to solve the "pedal too close" problem (other than backing it off, which I do now)?

Thanks,

V

vya,

Apparently, Ludwig had identified the "dilemma" (ding, ding, ding...extra points!), and put out a fix for it.

Not my photo, lifted from another post on another forum.

However, it is unclear if this is still available.

But can't be too difficult to fabricate something similar.

vya,

Cool, looks like Batterhead's got your situation covered.... Definitely the opposite of my problem...
