Discovering the Sound King Last viewed: 17 minutes ago

Some here may know that I recently purchased two Slingerland Sound Kings; a 14x5 and a 10 lug 14x6.5.

With the exception of the Premier 2000, I haven't owned or been attracted to metal shell snare drums until now.

[Exceptions being that, out of curiosity, I had a brief try out with an Acro, but soon traded it when I realized I wouldn't ever choose to play it. The same thing happened more recently with a Blacro, now promised to a bassist friend desirous of a good, inexpensive snare.]

The purchases of the Sound Kings were motivated by their surprisingly low prices. I was so impressed with the quality of the 5, the 6.5 was a natural follow-up. The 5" went for less than either of the Ludwigs!

I'm guessing that, aside from their being COB, a significant contributor to their tonal quality is the way the snare side is crimped to provide a snare bed. As far as I am aware, this feature is unique among metal shell snare drums. Correct me if I'm wrong. Ron

I read you other posts all about the arco...why would you bring that to another thread to get people to talk to you lol. If you didn't like it okay but there is no call to be rude. You didn't even need to mention that you used the others. A simple I tried other metal snares in the past and they weren't for me so I took a chance on these.

Hell in your other thread you could have just said you don't think its a good snare, its not for the kind of music I play. I can say that because I am not a fan of metal snares. I prefer a nice warmth sound out of a wood snare to metal. Nope you just had to say it was trash and that.

It's like you wanted to start another fight with people so you posted this with so many attacks at Ludwig and the arco and such. Maybe I am wrong??? I can say you sure didn't post this having your new drums in mind.

As to your question, I think that would change the sound however I think there is something else in question here. Did you use the same heads as the other "garbage" snares?? What about things like the wires? Them make a huge difference. To bad you sold the other one cause then you could test.

Just got this PM from the lovely Ron.

Some may be inclined to ascribe your stupidity and lack of language skill to your young age, but I am inclined to the opinion that those qualities of mind so clearly demonstrated at 19 in your response to my post will, unfortunately, likely disadvantage you for life.

On the other hand, you have time to prove me wrong... but not too much time!

Good luck to you.

Ron

Gosh isn't he nice. I was really debating to hit the post button because I was like hey this guy has a opinion and doesn't like the snare. I can completely get him and respect that. I have opinions and don't always agree with the vast majoriety of people which is why I own a business and am doing something people don't tend to agree with. I passed on college for a reason and it isn't cause I am dumb.

People went off on him and that wasn't cool either although if you say the things he did then you have to expect some attacks from people.

Now you see he's mad at me for pointing out what he did and how rude it was and continues to be. Did I do anything to this guy other than point out that he mentioned it again in another thread. Seriously we know you didn't like it why **** people off again for no reason??? How are you going to get peoples respect by doing it again. I cannot be the only person to see this. I am sure he will then yet again pick on me for idk spelling or grammar issues, maybe that he can play drums better idk. I am sure he will find someway to try and make me feel bad.

Mr. Lud, You know you're always alright in my book. Don't pay him mind. While I refuse to get in the middle of this, I will say that I, for one would pay no mind to things like that.

I tend to think that some people have a bad day and some times take it out on others. I dunno...

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

Ya know I am not mad. I don't care. He can hate me. or as he put in his last message to me "WOW... smart move! You're dumber than I thought." It doesn't really bother me. It just seems he disagreed and people got mad at him which I am sure its happened to all of us before. It's just you know to bring it up again like that isn't to cool. Now I am aware saying all this could make some of you now really like me but hey I am NOT trying to be rude here. I think this forum is just freaking awesome and totally glad I found it. I want to get into the vintage drum collecting myself because of how cool this is and all your stories and that.

Anyway to the dude Ron. I know you hate me but idk maybe when asking for help try not to bring it up that you had a disagreement before. Just my 2 cents and I am sure thats bout all its worth haha.

To respond to the original post...............

The guy at the local drum shop remarked about the nice POP that he heard when he tuned up my Sound King snare. He features Yamaha drums but really liked the sound of all my Slingerlands to tell the truth, but I can remember him really digging the sound king snare.

have a wonderful evening

Mr.Lud again demonstrates his stupidity. I deliberately chose not to respond publicly to his gratuitous insults (and display of poor language skills) on this thread out of consideration for his callow immaturity. Not content to leave well enough alone... in a show of righteous indignation... he proceeds to publish my private response to him.

The follies of youth? If only!

Could we get back to the thread?

Nice to see NOTHING has changed about the forum in my absence........DOH

On the subject of the Sound King....great snare when set up properly. A little finicky, but worth it......similar in sound to a COB Ludwig Super, and much cheaper.

On the subject of the Acrolite....again, great sounding snare WHEN SET UP PROPERLY. Most are not due to the fact that they were marketed as "student" drums. Also, most had the plastic butt end snare wires.....while innovative and original, as well as cheaper to make, they are not the greatest sounding snare wires. An upgrade to puresound wires or regular Ludwig metal ended wires greatly improves the sound. If you didn't like the sound of an acrolite, you surely won't like the sound of a supraphonic.....same shell construction with two more lugs.....sonically the same. And if you don't like the sound of the most recorded snare drum in history, then you sir, have no taste in good quality drum sounds! :p
