Some here may know that I recently purchased two Slingerland Sound Kings; a 14x5 and a 10 lug 14x6.5.
With the exception of the Premier 2000, I haven't owned or been attracted to metal shell snare drums until now.
[Exceptions being that, out of curiosity, I had a brief try out with an Acro, but soon traded it when I realized I wouldn't ever choose to play it. The same thing happened more recently with a Blacro, now promised to a bassist friend desirous of a good, inexpensive snare.]
The purchases of the Sound Kings were motivated by their surprisingly low prices. I was so impressed with the quality of the 5, the 6.5 was a natural follow-up. The 5" went for less than either of the Ludwigs!
I'm guessing that, aside from their being COB, a significant contributor to their tonal quality is the way the snare side is crimped to provide a snare bed. As far as I am aware, this feature is unique among metal shell snare drums. Correct me if I'm wrong. Ron
