Discovering the Sound King Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Mr.Lud again demonstrates his stupidity. I deliberately chose not to respond publicly to his gratuitous insults (and display of poor language skills) on this thread out of consideration for his callow immaturity. Not content to leave well enough alone... in a show of righteous indignation... he proceeds to publish my private response to him.The follies of youth? If only!Could we get back to the thread?Ron

No you choose to insult me behind everyone's backs so they wouldn't know making me look worse instead....anyway I am finished. Go ahead and call this one a win for you. I will take my stupidity and my poor language skills elsewhere.

Nice to see NOTHING has changed about the forum in my absence........DOHOn the subject of the Sound King....great snare when set up properly. A little finicky, but worth it......similar in sound to a COB Ludwig Super, and much cheaper. On the subject of the Acrolite....again, great sounding snare WHEN SET UP PROPERLY. Most are not due to the fact that they were marketed as "student" drums. Also, most had the plastic butt end snare wires.....while innovative and original, as well as cheaper to make, they are not the greatest sounding snare wires. An upgrade to puresound wires or regular Ludwig metal ended wires greatly improves the sound. If you didn't like the sound of an acrolite, you surely won't like the sound of a supraphonic.....same shell construction with two more lugs.....sonically the same. And if you don't like the sound of the most recorded snare drum in history, then you sir, have no taste in good quality drum sounds! :p

Haha I hope that wasn't directed at me to much. I don't have much experience with metal ones. I guess what I am saying is don't take what I said too firmly. There is a Acrolite on craigs right now. I was thinking about trying it out. I guess when I think about it I only used the schools metal ones and them were far from tuned properly.

Another one to consider if you can afford one is the COB Rogers Dynasonic snare.....when set up as the factory intended, they sound wonderful! Now, I am a Ludwig guy by nature, but If I had to make a choice between my favorite supraphonic and a Dynasonic....I'd be hard pressed to make a decision.....they are that good its too close to call....

Have you guys noticed the people on eBay call a Slingy TDR or Buddy Rich models Sound Kings? Aren't the Sound Kings the snare drums that are really heavy and have a parallel action strainer with the two part throw off mechanism? I used to have one in the 80's and when it is set up properly it is the best snare I have ever played. It was also one of the heaviest drums I ever played and lugged around. You needed a real snare drum stand for that tank. My cousin has my old drum now. The chrome on that shell was the most beautiful I have ever seen as well. I think mine was a 65' or 66' model.

I wish I could find a Sound King for sale here. I'm sure they sound great. I don't play my metal snares that much live, but I use them in the studio where I have hearing protection. The Ludwig Super COB has crimped beds. I didn't really like it until I found some narrow snares and used plastic straps instead of cord on the butt end.

OT - I can't wait for the day that software on forums that will say to you in a pleasant voice "Have you considered saying you don't think those drums are your cup of tea, rather than they are total crap"? and "perhaps you should say you are more of a Rogers drums fan, than say that Slingerlands are mostly firewood" I bet there's money in that! It is called Asseditor and has been passed over by the walking talking egocentric dognutbiters we are all to familiar with. Strangely enough, I don't have a copy.

Seriously, though, I thought this was laid back forum! On another forum (see how I smoothly move away from picking on anyone here) someone posted that Rickie Lee Jones was a piece of crap. The woman won a grammy and employed Steve Gadd, but still - not a second's hesitation in dismissing her entire musical output in one click of a mouse. I'm starting to that think breathalysers on computers could be another big seller too . . .

I'd better go and do some practice before I get the same treatment!

Aside: It's annoying to be gratuitously maligned and insulted by those who continue to wrongly impute to me words which in fact I never said. By your petty, childish, snide and dishonest put-downs, you thereby bring discredit only on yourselves.Bowing

Troutstudio, If you're looking for Sound Kings, they seem to be plentiful for quite low prices on Ebay these days. That's where I found mine. Also, I haven't found them to be particularly loud in comparison to my other wooden snares... certainly no louder than a 5.5x14 maple RK or a Gretsch, for example.
