Last night we opened for an ACDC Tribute band, we went on at 10, they were on at 12, when we finished our set, the leader of ACDC comes up to me and says, you better not tear your kit down, I looked at him and said why? he goes we have no clue where our drummer is, (holly crap I'm thinking) he said it never happened before, put we have to deal with it, he asked, you know ACDC tunes? I go, well yeah, by melody mostly, I looked at the set list, I said, let me talk to our guitar player and I'll be back. (what the guy did not know is our guitar player also plays drums,) I showed him the set list, he said, I can do that list in my sleep, I said, tell you what I'll do the first two, then you come up and finish. so........I go up on stage, have no clue how to start, where the breaks are, tempo change, I said to myself, just feel the song, and go for it, I nailed the first two with minor hick cups, then I handed our guitar player my sticks, and he finished the set strong, the guys were really happy, , but it was an interesting evening to say the least.

Great story. If it was a paying gig, I hope they hit you up twice with a BONUS for bailing their sorry a$$es out of a really bad situation. If it wasn't for you and your guitar player, they would have 'pulled the plug' on AC-DC! LOL

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Hope the no show is not because of an accident or family emergency. Not calling in the days of cell phones could mean something bad happened.

Nice save.

I see a couple positives! One is at least it was a tribute band for a slammin' group like AC/DC! Two is at least is WASN"T a Korn or a Rush tribute band! Not that you couldn't handle those bands, but you probably didn't bring enough drums/cymbals with you! All around a sweet deal as long as your guitar player didn't exact any revenge on your kit! LOL.

have a wonderful evening

You know, back in the day when we were on the road a lot, my brother, the real drummer, had this happen many times and saved more than a few sorry a$$ drummers from the fire. We would open for many acts, tributes, regional acts and a couple of big-timers, but I cannot divulge the names, even today. I can tell you he played with Danny Jo Brown once, if any of you know THAT name....

I was the production manager and lighting director for a national act in the early 90's. The drummer was flying in the day of show and got stuck in Chicago. I ended up filling in that night. No sound check: just a quick listen to the click track in headphones. (waaay too loud). The band played to a click that ran backing tracks, midi patch changes for the keyboards and syncd video via SMPTE so it was imperative that I was spot on. I asked the bass player if all the tracks started with 4 or 8 counts as I knew there were no count offs in the track other than just click from a conversation back at rehearsals weeks before. He told me that all songs started with 8 clicks. I was aware that the first three songs ran together as one track. When the first song ended there was a pause and then the click started. I knew there was too much space between the end of the first song and the start of the click to actually have time for eight clicks so I decided to go ahead and start the song after 4 clicks. I was really relieved when the rest of the band came in as well! After the first three songs I called the bass player over and asked if there would be any more count off surprises for me. :-) The 90 minute gig went quite well. The only problem at all was that the band's drummer wore gloves and used friction tape on his sticks. I don't wear gloves and there were no sticks on site tht had not been taped and I still have a scar on my index finger 20 years later.

I remember the Danny Joe Brown Band, and played with the original bass player that was on the first album,Buzzy Meekins. From what he told me anything could and did happen with that crew.

Reminds me of a "fill in" I did in the late 70's where the

"Whole Band Was A No Show".

Story from agent was their drummer is sick they need a fill in.. 2 1/2 hour drive to a remote mountain town out of Sydney.."Oberon" A club auditorium concert .. (not even a dance venue). Set up the kit went for a meal, came back & no band.. they'd last minute cancelled out. Panic set in..Three variety artists to back.. country singer guitarist.. Hawaian pedal steel duo.. & a magic act. It was a sellout & so the show had to go on. 3 stiff JD's for me & away we went with a very short list of songs accompanied by pedal steel.. acoustic guitar & the Slingerlands.. most embarassing gig of my life.

Needless to say, I gave the agent heaps & still do whenever I see him.

Cheers
