A couple photos of the drum in my livingroom. I haven't got my late 50's Gold Sparkle kit set up right now otherwise I would have this sitting right behind my 14 floor tom.
This drum - with the original (looks like it anyway) Gretsch batter head - sounds very good. That head has been around - drink glass circles.....yellow (smokey clubs?) and some dints but it tunes up nice. I don't want to play the head much and I'm certainly not going to clean it. Poppies (Mark) included like new Gretsch Permatone heads with the drum and they sound fantastic with this drum.
I found some photos of Elvin playing a Gretsch Round badge Sparkle kit but they're in Black&White so I can't tell if he's playing this drum. In one of the photos he's playing a Satin Flame Gretsch snare drum too. I've read that the only two RB drums to survive over the years were my drum and a Olive Satin Flame bass drum and Charlie Watts bought the bass drum.
Wow Gary I had no idea you got this one! Man what a great chunk if history and nice drum besides. Very very very cool hope you enjoy it for a long time! ;)
Thanks - yes, it is a nice feeling to have this ole drum in the house. I have it right by the Christmas tree for now. It was a big gamble for me and I never thought I'd actually win it. I jumped into the bidding thinking this one will go to a big name collector and there is little chance someone like me with very limited funds to spend on collecting drums would end up with it. I set my Max bid fairly high and things worked out.......this time.
I bought a set of 6A Gretsch sticks and the display case from Donn Bennett. The sticks come with a letter as well. It would be nice to get a Birdland LP signed by Mr. Jones - but that's kind of pushing it haha.
I got Keiko,Elvins wife,in Detroit,to get Elvin to sign a pretty big poster of himself playing a Yamaha kit in Israel at the Red Sea Jazz Fest..........
We saw him play right before he signed it at the free Detroit Jazz Festival that they have every year...
He signed it Elvin R. Jones.......
I need to frame that puppy!
BTW..he died on my birthday...May,18th...
Hey, I've got the same drum! Except it's Black Nitron and Elvin never played it, as far as I know... DOH
That is pretty cool Blair. We can start a little museum.
Yes - I would frame that one for sure.

I imagine the black Nirton finish is beautiful. My drum teacher (in 1965) had a new Rogers kit in a what I think was Black Gloss....maybe wrapped I can't recall. They were gorgeous drums at that time. I've never seen the Black Nitron Gretsch in real life but I imagine it to be gorgeous as well.
I will take very good care of your drum Mark - you can be sure of that.It is one fine early Christmas presant and a very good retirement gift to myself (Dec 7th 2012 - my last day of work for the Feds.).This drum is even more special to me, let alone it was owned by the late Mr. Elvin Jones, in that the finish celebrates Gretsch's 75th Anniversary in 1958.....that is about when my Gold Sparkle kit was made.....x-mas2
ah...I see you are a multiple forum member as well
great to see you here
enjoy that drum
