Favorite bassists Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I commented about a bass player on another thread (Joe Dart: google him) and began thinking that the bass player is intimately involved with what we do (and vice versa).

I suppose it shouldn't be so, but the quality of the bass playing seriously impacts the quality of my drumming. I'm between bands now, and I've turned down offers from some auditions I've passed because the bassist wasn't up to snuff.

I like a player with excellent tone (a bass that sounds like a bass) who can play an interesting line that still thrusts the song rhythmically without overpowering it. That's a lot to ask for, but there are far too many bassists who play overly simple lines or worse, mimic what the guitarist is doing. It's true that one (or both) of those methods can be appropriate at times, but not as a matter of course, at least in my opinion.

Anyway, who are some of your favorites?

There are so many to choose from, but here's a start (that could easily be different five minutes from now). This isn't a ranking, it's just a short list of some who came to mind without spending all morning on it:

John Entwistle: Listen closely to "The Real Me," among others.

Tony Levin

Paul McCartney: Tone for days. I'd love to play with him.

So many Motown guys, but I'll say James Jamerson.

My favorite bass player is the one I worked with on and off for fifteen years, Bob Vierling. Bob is a New York city bass player that you've never heard of. He's my all-time favorite because the man knows how to play and he knows how to play with a drummer. When a drummer and a bass player are working together as a rhythm section playing a tune, somebody has to 'stay home' while the other guy 'adds color'. If one guy isn't holding down the groove then the music just gets cacophonous/noisy. When the bass player and drummer are locked in with each other and they work well as a musical team, then the trade off between who is holding down the groove and who is adding color is smooth and seamless. Bob and myself know each other so well musically that we automatically leave room for each other to stretch out a little bit without having to discuss it beforehand. I'll do a little something for four bars and then I'll hold down the groove while Bob stretches out a little bit. Always within the context of the music we're playing.

Bob Vierling, a guy you never heard of is my all-time favorite bass player. :D

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Add Bob Mosley of The Moby Grape.

You may laugh if I include Ross Vallory of Journey, but listen to their first three albums, before they added Steve Perry on vocals. They were a jazz-rock band with amazing chops.
