How has nobody mentioned Pino Palladino yet?

The 'big three' in my book are James Jamerson, John Paul Jones and Pino Palladino. Must be something to do with both names starting with the same letter and playing bass.

One of the great bass players that hasn't been mentioned is John Entwhistle of the Who. Amazing bass player.

And... I'm surprised more players haven't picked a bass player they have worked with and that they enjoy playing with. For my money, -the guys we get to work with- are infinitely more important to us than any star players that we enjoy listening to and that we might admire. Listing 'stars' we can do all day, but if, in your musical travels, you have found a bass player that you are compatible with and that is fun to play with, then -that guy- is the greatest bass player in the world.

Mark - I'm trying to understand this sick obsession you have with me. The way you go out of your way to try to bait me into arguments and get my attention. Haven't you figured it out by now? I never 'react' to you, which is what you want. Instead, I always 'respond' there's a difference.

Are you in love with me? Is it a g*y thing? Maybe you're jealous? The only other thing it could be is that you're just a very angry, frustrated individual. Yep, it's a real 'pick-em' alright and none of them are very appetizing choices. You labor under the delusion that I somehow care about what you think of me, that you have the power to upset me with words.

Stop trying to bait me. It has never worked for you and it never will. Kiss

Writing the English language 101:

> reading 101,,,, ,,,John entwistle listed in the very !! first two post !!!

Should read: Reading 101: (Capitol R, no commas) John Entwhistle (Last names get caps) -is- listed in the very (no exclamation points) first two post(s.) Plural.

If you're going to insult me at least try to do it in English so I can understand it. Did you get past third grade? Your ability to express yourself in writing is always labored, atrocious and just difficult to read.

Try again and this time... so I can understand what you're so desperately trying to say.

Reading101 Not a strong point ole boy is it ? Look @ post # 13.

The OP has him listed, just as the 2nd post does.

Joke just can't admit that his long time drug aduse, and sinility, have enabled his ability to see!!

It is clearly Listed twice.

You can throw all the juvenile insults all you wish. When you have nothing to bring you resort to name calling and insults on the most of pretentious lower levels. Your ****phobic innuendo is a demonstration of the bile you spew.

I'm still laughing at you. you still remain a Total Joke!! Cool Dude:DLaughing H

These three have spoiled me: I just can't play anymore with a so-so bassist who needs a week to relearn a part if the band decides to play in a different key or feel. All have amazing tone and musicality and it didn't take long at all to develop telepathy with them: They know how to follow a bass drum and when to lay back and when to take the lead.

* Jim Ide, Columbus, OH, 1980-1. I wish I knew where he is. This guy oozed swing but was of the Bill Wyman school of stage presence.

* Billy Bold, Santa Barbara, CA, 2001-5. We played in a jamming blues band where we had to follow the leader in unplanned sets that were often 40-minute medleys. Never a dull moment.

* Sally Sonnenburg, Lake Forest, CA, 2009-14. I miss playing with her the most. Our rhythm section was greater than the sum of its parts. She is a very muscular player with heavy John Paul Jones and Jack Bruce influences.

Thanks for putting the thread back on track, Al. I was just surprised that with an open question like "Favorite Bassists?" more guys didn't talk about great bass players they've worked/played with. Hearing a personal story about Billy, Jim and Sally is just a cool way for us to get to know each other a little better and relate some our own experiences with bass players. What more is there to say about Pastorius, or any of the other famous musicians that hasn't already been said a thousand times. I enjoy more hearing about the Sally's and Billy's and Jim's out there that never get the kind of kudos and recognition they deserve.

Thank you for the response and for sharing -your personal experiences- with bass players. Now -that- is interesting to me. Hearing more about Billy Sheehan et.al. ... not so much. :p

John

PS - Just an FYI... I have permanently blocked Mark (Vintagemore2000) in my user section. I will no longer have to read -anything- that he has to say. Which means you guys will never have to see another exchange between us like the one above. I'm just sick and tired of the constant baiting and stream of insults I have to put up with from him. Those days are over. My Mark-free days begin today! VDF just got a lot better for me now that I won't be able to see any of his posts. I don't have to read, deal with, or have -anything- to do with Mr. Mark. I sent him a little stinger of a pm to let him know that his anger is only hurting him and that I am blocking him. He's free to rant and rave all by himself. His posts have vanished from the forum for me. I'm Free!!!!! :D

Playing in a couple of local big bands (mainly rehearsal bands) yeah I've gone all posh!:o. I'm going to admit I actually got let go by one, it realy upset me- well the bass player had a way of playing so that it just didn't feel 'solid' for me, it was like playing with a rhythm guitarist and played a bit too quietly for me. In the OTHER band that plays more or less the same thing I can actually play with that bass player, there's just no question as to 'where the beat is' with him, solid, fluent, musical and good tone could describe his playing, just easier for me to play with him but I don't mean his playing is simplistic. I absolutely LOVE the way the bassist plays in the tribute band Im in, this 3 piece just play stuff by the police- so I have to be Stewart Copland, I love it- this lads bass playing is VERY exiting. Yes John entwhistle is a big favourite of mine.flowers2
