Coated emperors over coated ambassadors on the toms has been doing it for me for a while now. Snare gets a coated cs reverse dot over an ambassador snare side and kick has a clear emperor batter and a smooth white ambassador front without a port. Got a fiberskyn with a port for sound guys that insist on that. This is all on my '80 superstar and jarrah stave snare.

Thanks for all the replies. It's really helpful to see what you guys are using. I have tended to use a heavier weight head for the bottom to help cut down on nasty overtones. But it seems most of you go with the same or thinner on the reso side. Maybe I have to switch it around.... Thanks again

I like coated ambassadors for batters and either clear or coated ambassadors for resos but for the floor toms I like two ply heads for batters. I think a single ply batter head on the floor tom sounds too "boingy" usually. Conversely, I think a double ply head on the rack toms usually sounds too choked and not as open sounding as I'd like.

Snare: Ambassador coated over clear

Bass: Ambassador coated both sides. Aquarian Texture Coated is on my Sonor teardrop reso side and sounds fine - couldn't hear a difference.

Toms: Vintage Ambassador top and any lightly used coated head i can find on the cheap on the bottom. (I like my heads broken in.)

Only exceptions are my Trixon floor tom, which sounds horribly choked with Remo heads. Had no choice but to use Evans 360 coated over clear to open it up and be able to tune it.

And the Rogers COB Powertone I had. For whatever reason, it only recorded well with a Coated Vintage A over a clear Diplomat.

Tried Fiberskyn 3s which I got for free, but they weren't for me. Neither were most Evans heads I've tried. Too expensive to experiment, so I stay with Remo A and Vintage A 98% of the time.
