Does anybody know where I can get a couple of felt strips for my '65 20"x14" Ludwig kick?

Your local fabric store. Buy a yard of felt and cut your own.

So here's a dumb one. Restored my old bass last week and found the place where I pulled my felt strip off in the late 60s. I've not missed it, not without the small pillow tossed into the drum.

What am I missing without the felt? Got a pretty good bang right now.

Well, I'm certainly not Gene Krupa, but that felt is just to muffle the "ring" from the head. If you have a pillow in there, you're muffling even more than the felt strip would do....it's all to your taste. I like a "little" ring, but it's all a matter of personal taste.

I feel that the felt strip "pushes back" the head and beater too though,so if it's not in there, the feel is different.

Cuts the ringing down, not unlike moongel, etc. but keeps the boom.

Glad I found this thread.

A while ago I pulled out remnants of what was an old felt when I first took possession and never gave it a second thought to replace it. To be honest, I didn't know then what it was for. But now in my never ending quest to recapture original sound and stop a little SS bass drum ring, I want to put it (or them) back inside. I have seen a couple of variations of how many and where to place them on the net and I know it will be a matter of what will sound best to me. But I'm curious. Are felt strips put in at the factory? Or is this a user customization trick? If I buy 100% cotton felt at the fabric store, should I cut them to 3 or 4 inches wide?

Thanks for you help.
