Friendly Trade (Or Not)? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Sooo..........two good friends who happen to enjoy playing as well as collecting vintage drums get together for lunch and "drum talk" the other day. During their conversation the possibility of a trade involving a late 50s WFL Black Diamond Pearl Compacto Model (4x14) snare and a Ludwig late 70s (SN 1619590) 6.5x14 Supraphonic snare arises. Neither drum is getting much, if any, use by its current owner.

Since neither of the individuals has seen too many "Compacto" models on the market, its value comes into question. The Supraphonic obviously is much easier to determine. Both agree that "rarity" doesn't necessarily equate to increased value, especially in the vintage drum world.

Other than some slight discoloration from a drum shop sticker that was applied to the BDP wrap under the WFL badge the Compacto snare appears to be in extremely sound and original condition. A good "bath" would do it wonders. The current owner never attempted to address the discoloration, which is mainly some residue left over from the sticker. The Supraphonic appears to be in even better condition.

Neither party seems willing to "pull the trigger" on a possible trade based on the uncertainty regarding the Compacto model. Would any of you "experts" out there have any advice regarding a possible trade involving these two specific drums? Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. THANKS in advance for your help.

Attached are some pics of each drum.

Hmm...that is a conundrum, isn't it? The Compacto being more rare definitely adds to the value, but Bonham sure bumped the value of a B/O badge 6.5x14 Supra up for eternity, right? At this crossroads, it's only worth it, if both parties agree that their own personal "value" of said drum is worth it to them in a trade. I would think, that between friends, there could be a trial period with both drums until a decision is made?

If you are the party who owns the 6.5 drum, you can always find another one. That's not the case with the Compacto. The guy who ends up with Compacto gets the best end of the deal.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

The 6.5 Supraphonic is worth a little more (IMO), but it's close enough that I'd be fine being on either side of that trade.

I may be looking at this the wrong way, but what are the intents of the potential traders? Do they plan on playing the drums at some point, collecting them and displaying/storing them, or reselling them? In my mind, the $$ value of each drum is almost irrelevant unless someone plans to sell the drum they just traded for. If you guys are both happy with the sound/condition of the other drum, than why not pull the trigger? They both look like fantastic drums from the pics that were posted. What do your ears tell you? Go for it!!

It's always easy to trade other peoples drums I guess :). Good luck!

HHHHHMMMMM.Value vs. rarity. In truth I think these are the drums that both of you offered up.Then as value is in the eye of the buyer/trader then it's an even up trade.I'm sure both of you have other snare's you can part with, but if this was the deal you both came up with, then it's equitable.

You could agree to a trade satisfaction period, but what if you have an impass.Decide on a tie breaker before the trade.

But consider, that you're already asking the question about equity. There's no harm in deciding to save a friendship, and just say....I decided to keep it.Status quo is not a bad thing.

As a player and a collector....I'd have these two options:

Option 1: If you have the money to go on ebay and buy a second Supra, then make the trade and have a sweet piece of history.

Option 2: If you DON'T have the money (like me ;) ) to go out and buy another Supra, then keep it. IF your style ever changes the tonal range in that Supra is larger than most think. I will be buried with a Ludwig 6.5 x 14 of some sort. Best size on the market.

But hey, who am I right?
