Frustrated Dynasonic Owner Last viewed: 4 hours ago

The owner/modifier of this Dyna probably looked at the original bearing edges and said, "Damn, they forgot to put in the snare beds at the factory. No wonder my replacement snare wires are rattling." And then he proceeded to increase the beds from 4/1000ths of an inch to 1/4 of an inch.

Before I can condemn such action, I have to remind myself of what my fellow drummers and I did to our second-hand sets in the 70's. We were drilling and modifying ten-year old sets all the time to suit our needs. Removing the "old-fashioned" pearl wraps to show the natural wood shells was very common. We had no remorse because these drums weren't "vintage" yet; they were just old, used drums.

So even if this Dyna's value is ruined, it's usefulness may not be. I'd fill in those deep snare beds with epoxy wood filler and have the bearing edges recut. Might be a way to salvage this player drum.

True Mike!, but... this is a case of the owner of this drum at the time of the modification, NOT UNDERSTANDING HOW to set up a Dynasonic! I can easily recall going back 35 years! .. ( and just WHERE has THAT gone??!! ) .. friends of mine that played Rogers and had COB Dynasonics, as well as the occasional wood Dynasonic, removing the frame and wires because they just couldn't get the drum to sound the way they wanted, and that was due to the type of music they were all playing then of course, and the Dynasonic was just the wrong choice for them! Indeed. Only much later did I start to get interested in the Dynasonic and it's sonic properties... and how to set 'em up. So...

True enough! We don't know WHEN this was done, as it may have been quite some time ago, and probably was, due in whole or part to what I just mentioned above. All we can do is speculate on that. Your fix though, would work!, but the drum would have to be priced much lower in my humble opinion because, as RARE as this size/wrap is in a wood Dynasonic... the drum has been severely compromised. Still a BEAUTY otherwise though! I guess it's a good thing that I am a 5X14 type of guy then, otherwise...!

Maybe the crafty ones among us could make it a 5x14. The only thing you'd need aside from moving the rings and cutting the edges again would be short rods. It already has a standard strainer. Appears someone got away with the original longer-handled 6.5 depth version.
