I hear ya long John. The other drums should come back to life okay but that kick is going to be tough. I have already read some interesting approaches to the issue but none seem really full proof. I will be filling all the holes with the dowel and wood glue method on the kick. May or may not fill the holes on the floor tom since this will be a players kit at best. I'll keep posting my progress.

here's a pic of my 12x15 clubdate floor tom in a kit. its the one that I mentioned that someone had already drilled it for classic mounts. I just found some in nickel to match the rest of the kit and used straight clubdate legs to make it look like I wanted ..

That kit looks slick! Dig the 15!

Here is the the whole family stripped of their hardware and freshly bathed:

I decided to tackle the 12 inch tom first and discovered that the years of storage in the desert made the adhesive hard and I was able to chip it away pretty easy like rock candy. Might be a good thing if I can avoid using a ton of chemicals.
The down side is that there are some silver flakes flying of the drum as well because this thing is pretty dried out. Looks fine from about a foot away but up close you can see some very small cracks in the wrap. Some of it may be adhesive sitting on the wrap weird that may come off but either way I think it will look just fine for a player kit.

Wrap actually split at the seam where it tucks into the scarf joint so I will need to re-glue and clamp. Once again for player should still look good enough.

As long as the back edge of that bass drum is in round... consider cutting down the drum making it a 12"x22"!
Remove the re-ring from the front end and cut off an inch or more of that badly out of round (and wavy) front edge of the drum. Replace the re-ring, round off the outside edge and that drum will sound great and you'll be able to put heads on it and tune it up. We just had a thread about how great 12" deep bass drums sound. It's just a suggestion for saving the drum.
John
Thanks for the input Purdie! I did think of taking off the re-ring and cutting it back but it is actually a factory 12 inch deep drum now. Which means I would probably have to go to a ten inch deep. I was excited when I found this drum because I read that recent thread on 12 inch deep kicks! When I tackle the kick I think I am going to try a method I found on the DFO which involves taking out the bad re-ring using some sort of jack or turnbuckle to push up the part that is sagging then re-gluing the re-ring back down but with a part of the re-ring that is in round place on the part of the shell that was sagging.

I actually think I am going to give this guy's method a shot to put the kick back in round.

Sounds like a plan..
I'd be thinking that rotation of the ring followed by some of the clues from the video will probably provide the best result... seems the wettera the bettera with the diluted glue works..
Cheers

+1 That sounds like it will work!
I didn't know it was already a 12" or I wouldn't have suggested it. I was trying to think of a way to save the bass drum and still have a nice punchy drum when it was all said and done. I'll be following along to see how it all comes out. This is a great thread for drum-rehab addicts.
I'm rooting for you!
John
