Gift from Gene Krupa Last viewed: 1 hour ago

My father-in-law, Bob Mckee, was the Mike Douglas Show drummer in the 1960s. During this period, he had the opportunity to play behind many stars of that day, such as Sammy Davis Jr., Barbara Striestand, Louis Amrstrongs, just to name a few. He also played drums for big bands Ray Anthony and Buddy Morrow in the 1950s. He lives and works in Cleveland and in the 1960s his band was the house band at a downtown nightclub called The Theatrical, where anybody whose anybody would frequent at night. Once, when Gene Krupa was in town for the Mike Douglas Show he popped in at night and sat in and played Bob's drums and wound up breaking one of his cymbals. Bob, didn't care, but the next day Gene felt bad and came by the club and presented Bob and personalized stamped G.K. Zildjian cymbal. Well that the story and I've included some pictures and Bob, whose getting older was wondering if it had any significant value and if so is interested in selling it. So, I mention that I would ask the forum for their expert opinion. Any input would be appreciated!

thanks.

Great story.

Should probably post this in the Vintage Cymbal section so Drumaholic can see this.

He's the Zildjian expert.

Wow!

I bet it would be worth it to Zildjian too to see that thing. Could potentially be a museum piece!

It -is- a museum piece! That cymbal should be handled by someone like, Steve Maxwell or in a well-advertised auction. Then Bob would be guaranteed to get the best return.

It's a crying shame that he has to sell it. I'm certain it's a well loved memento of his. I used to watch, Mike Douglas. Tell, Bob for me that I said, Thank you for all the great music. I always admired pro's like Bob, and Ed Shaughnessy, Louis Belson, all great TV show band working drummers.

Auction or Steve Maxwell for the cymbal. Best of luck to Bob with the sale. I'm sure it'll find a good home where it will be loved and preserved.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I heard of someone with a 16" GK cymbal getting either $2K or $3K for it!

I had a 18" B R .... A.Zil cymbal once. I traded it to a guy for a 20,12,14 Blue Sparkle Rogers Cleveland kit.........

I should have thrown it on FeeBay.......might have got $3k for it.....or more!

But,I only paid $75 for it from an old guy in Jersey who sent me quite a few 18"s A's in 1 shot........

Was I surprised when I saw THOSE initials the day I opened the package!Jump For Joy

Really cool! Thanks! I've probably seen your dad on tv countless times! My dad drummed around that era too. Though he never advanced as far as your's, he sat in with some big names. I wish I had a souvenier of his from those times. You may want to reconsider parting with it.

If you do want to sell, I'd like to get a chance to buy it. I'm not a reseller and I would take care of it.

Cool story! I grew up watching the MD show. Mike was all class.

Whatever happened to the cymbal GK broke? I hope he kept that too!

wow! thanks for all the nice compliments.

This was my father-in-laws idea to perhaps sell it.

He doesn't need the money in particular at this time.

He was jokingly telling me just last night he has to

prepare for dying, but He's doing well and still playing

in a swing big-band at 86 years young!

I told him to the right buyer it could be worth a couple

thousand and he thinks that's cool.

thanks for looking and commenting everyone.

He's got 100 pictures of guests from the show in his

basement on the walls and they are a treat to look at.

He even has that original drum head used on the show.
