As far as I know, Gretsch never made a 13" snare of any kind in the vintage (pre 80's) era. Always 14" snares. If they make them now I don't know when they started.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
4160s from the 70s (so not RB) models can be found for a bargain sometimes... here's one for $200.
Thanks Mad Mike. I wish I had waited now. Lol... Oh well, I have my old RB shell and lugs now. I just need hoops. I saw an eBay thing where one of my vintage sources has a new micro strainer but they are 88.00 bucks. It is new and looks to be beefed up compared to the vintage ones. I may go that route. I think I have an old p-85 around here with a butt. I just hate the thought of drilling. This one is gonna be for me to gig with regularly so as I said in past posts it isn't going to have the allure of a pristine vintage drum. I want this one to be a workhorse. I saw where trick makes a retrofit throw off for supraphonics. I wonder if they make the same for Micro's?

the new microsensitive does fit the old hole pattern... it's available from steve maxwell. don't drill!
btw, i just paid $200 for a complete round badge 4160. you may want to keep an eye out for a complete drum and sell the parts you already bought.
i seen that one, but its a eight lug, the winner hands down is the rare and illusive 10 lugger 4165

I have a 4160 I bought new in 1967 and it has the lightning throwoff. This drum still compares favorably to pretty much anything. I also have a nice supra. Both are very crisp but the rim shots on the gretsch are other worldly. It can be tuned any way you like and still sound great. I also have a RB 4157 with lightning throwoff but these are rare. Gretsch was making mostly COBs in the late 60s. IMO, there is no reason to have 10 lugs. The shell and die cast hoops are so stiff, extra lugs are not needed.

I had actually been in touch with the owner of the one on Craigslist before that got mentioned here.
Last night I bought the 70s 4160 from him. It's fantastic.
I might replace the snares on it though. Anyone have a recommendation?
Also if anyone has a key that will fit the key holder, I might be interested in buying that...
