It`s Brass with no crimp, probably a single tension floater that had no lugs at all, then someone did all that sh*t to it !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

The shell is definitely correct and original '80s COB Gretsch...they didn't crimp the beds like you see on a '60s COB Ludwig. And the model number 4166 is correct for that drum - 6.5x14 20 lug COB. Unlike the earlier paper tags, those '80s gray and white stickers do NOT come off, so that sticker was either placed there by the factory, or someone got their hands on a NOS 4166 sticker (seems unlikely).

I think the drum is (unfortunately) factory original. Maybe it was a "B" stock, or factory second, that was sold at a discount?

Hi,

The phrase raised above "should not have left the factory" is my guess. I think the likelihood of this being a home job is less than that it is a botched factory job.

You know, a new hire, somebody's kid given a gig they weren't qualified for, etc., the work was botched.

What motivated who to put let that drum out of the factory is the question that intrigues me. You do hear some pretty bad stories about the build quality during the Baldwin era.

If one was to make a Gretsch snare themselves, and quite poorly HAND DRILLED, they would need to start with the sticker !! That wasn`t drilled by a factory machine/jig !! Not even re-guageing it !!

Hmm, not sure what you mean by "they would need to start with the sticker". I'm not sure how it happened, but I've seen other factory Gretsch drill jobs like this...pretty sloppy and not aligned, like the driller didn't bother to use any kind of a template.

Nope, not a free floating shell. There are crimped snare beds. Not very deep, but they are there.

Wow! I hade no idea my poor drum would attract so much attention :D

I just love this forum. After all this information and speculation that you guys have contributed with, at least I draw the conclusion that this drum was in fact made at the factory. -Not a drum Gretsch would be proud of, but still....

My plan is to clean the drum, adjust the holes, put it back together with all the parts as neat and aligned as possible and then, play it Keep on Pl again and again and again. After all it is a pretty cool drum...
