Here is an ad for guitar center

“Looking for qualified personal to work in our drum department”. Candidates do not need to have any experience either working with or playing drums. You need to be courteous, and pleasant on the phone, if a customer asks you a question, put them on hold and ask someone in the guitar department and see if they have the answer. Remember we do not like to keep our customers on hold for more than 20 minutes. Ideal candidates will know that for the most part drums and cymbals are round, and you play them with sticks. NO education required. Send resume to blah blah blah

A Guitar Center is a good franchise to own because they cater to squids and sell mostly entry level gear and some B-stock pro gear with consistent advertising. A formula that works and with the right demographics, an absolute gold mine...

I had good luck at GC in Robinson Town Center (Pittsburgh area). The drum-guy was a legit drummer. He slayed the floor kits, and knew what a kit older than 10 years, was. I am sure it is hit-or-miss, but I have proof that at least one GC had a good floor person on duty!

GC takes a serious beating on this site, and often for good reason. I too have had my issues, inexperienced sales people, catering mostly to beginners, etc.

But I'm going to commit a cardinal sin on this site and say this...

In defense of GC, if I need a drum head, pair of sticks, particular bass drum beater, or an odd size case, ASAP - I know I can do a GC drive-by and usually get what I need. In addition they do a good "used" business and I've gotten some good deals on stuff, mostly because they buy so low, sometimes not knowing what the price should be, and I benefit. I will often walk my students through drums and help them get into a first kit - and negotiate a few bucks off.

I live near GC and stop in once or twice a week and find the drum shop folks to be helpful, polite, and in most instances eager to learn what they don't know. (I have met a few butt-heads, not many)

Let's be realistic here - it's a business, in business to do what businesses must do - make money! That means, buy low, sell high, cater to the largest market of customers, and sell what people buy, it also means you can't pay huge salaries! Which translates to a rotating staff of younger folks who may be less knowledgeable than one of us!

Guitar center has sponsored many of my drum clinics and events and loaned me tens of thousands of dollars of gear over the years. They've also inspired many young drummers with the Drum-off.

Guitar Center is what it is and it does what it does well. I can't fault GC for not being a small locally owned shop with lots of drum expertise and years of experience or selection in vintage or high end gear, any more than I can fault my favorite local shop for not having millions in inventory, or thousands of square footage!

There I said it!

1958 Gretsch Kit
1966 Kent Kit
1969 Ludwig Standard Kit
1970 Rogers Power Tone Kit
1970's Ludwig Vistalite Kit
1994 Yamaha Maple Custom
2010 Yamaha Maple Custom
28 assorted snares (including some real crap)
and 1 really nice K Zildjian Istanbul

And very well said! One thing that bothers me is guys avoiding GC just because they are "big box" store who pushed out the small mom and pop stores. That could be true but the guys that complain about this are the same guys shopping at Home Depot, Menards and Lowes and those companies put several small lumberyards out of business.

Thank you!
