Great vid! Mickey really wails on those babies. Style very reminiscent of Jeremy Gelbwaks I'm thinking. The Monkees did have some great tunes though.

Those are beautiful Gretsch drums. Live, Mickey set up his drums the same way, playing right handed on a lefty set, with dual tom toms on a seperate stand. I used the same set up very briefly in the late 70s.

I met Mickey a couple of times in the 1970s. Very nice guy. He was shocked to know that I had heard of his first band(where he used the name "Mike Swain").

Okay, whether it was Mickey, or Hal, or both, it got me thinking about those old Monkees tunes... Decided to download a greatest hits album from 95, or 97 - 20 tunes. Sat down and drummed along...had a hoot, and a pretty good workout as well. Great era, great tunes!...had 'em on album, and CD already, but downloading was easier...conserve my energy for the drums.

The question of why are the monkees not in the R&R hall of shame? the beach boys are in because of their huge catalog of music Brian Wilson as a musician is simply in the genius class there was a time when the BB, and the beatles were neck and neck on the charts ... and the R&R hall of shame is a freeking joke it is a popularity contest when groups like Deep Purple, Grand Funk railroad, Rory gallager ,Ten years after, are not in yet they are inducting Hip Hop artists well then it for sure is a JOKE!
