He sucked me in four years ago! Stanton is the one that got me hooked on second line. I knew about Johnny Vidocovich, but Stanton has taken it to another level when the style is applied to the kit. The man uses the entire kit, plus! I have been playing with a 13" Pandiero for several years and now I can't go without it. Same for jingle-sticks. Who knew they could be so much fun? Stanton turned me on to all of that stuff and now I'm hooked like a fish. I play that stuff every day. It makes me feel good to play it. Because of second line, I'm enjoying my drums in a way I haven't been able to for decades. It's just pure in-the-moment fun and challenging enough to keep me moving forward.
Enjoy the DVD. I promise you, it won't be your last Stanton Moore instructional disc! I eat that stuff up with a spoon!

MickM was over today and the first thing he asked me to show him was how to play the groove/sticking pattern in the second video I posted! (LLRLRLRR) I had big fun showing him how to play it on a practice pad and then we had a blast when we moved the party to the drums.
Mick is a very quick study. I love sharing stuff with him because he pays attention and then works hard to get it all down. What I showed him today is intermediate/advanced stuff. Mick's only been playing a bit longer than a year, but he was able to get it and spit it back at me after only a few tries. I'm impressed with Mick. He's going to be a genuinely good drummer.
Hey Mick, tell them about the big fun using the jingle-stick!

YeeHaw!! Had a blast a Purdie's yesterday. A solid 3 hrs. of instruction(of which I'll be happy to digest 1) but I think I'm finally getting a handle on this stuff. Between John explaining why/how things fit together and my trying to practice a minimum of an hour each evening I can finally feel some payoff. It is very frustrating when I can't immediately spit back what he shows me but I know the drill having taught a few guitar students throughout the years. Big time respect to John and all you VDF'ers who've put in your time in pursuit of becoming "drummers".
As far as the jingle sticks, I think I'll stick to my timing and accuracy and maybe when I get some speed I'll venture into that territory. They sound cool as hell for the New Orleans second line stuff. When I hear somebody that can do that on a kit it grabs my guts in the best way possible.
Hey Mick, you're always welcome at Rancho Purdie! Besides you being great company, anytime I can spend three hours just playing drums... is a good day for me!
Let's do Delaware Drum show on Sunday if weather allows! PM me.
