Hardware Thread Repair Video Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

I recently stripped out the threads on my flat-base WFL snare drum stand. I just did a quick repair to those threads using a HeliCoil and posted a video to YouTube. [ame="https://youtu.be/T2ZkH5RPDzs"]YouTube[/ame]

For about $25 in materials, I saved this vintage stand. I figured I'd just pass this information along in case any of you have similar hardware that can be brought back to life.

This is a low-budget video, so keep expectations low! :)

Thanks for the great video. With basic tools and Helicoil we can salvage so many stripped parts. I have used them in industrials settings but never even thought of using them for this application !

Thanks

Great video! I've been needing to do that with a flat-base WFL hihat stand.

Thanks for the positive feedback! In response to how long they last, HeliCoils are fastener-grade stainless steel, so they're generally stronger than the original threads (especially in this case where the threads were in zinc steel or a pot metal casting).

I'll point out that a HeliCoil is only useful when you have a good amount of Thread depth, in this case about 3/8". So had the threads stripped out on the folding legs, there wouldn't have been enough material for the HeliCoil. In that case, a better bet would be welding the hole shut, then drilling and tapping, but that would require some challenging disassembly.

We use them on left side crank arms on bicycles.

A lot of people don't realize that the left pedal on a bike is reverse thread.
