I bought a Tama Imperialstarkit(with Hardware and Cymbals) from the 70s today - for about a 100 $ ! 18"kickdrum 14" Floortom 12" HT wich is quite rare as far as i know, but the clou was the snare. It was a Ludwig Supraphonic alloy shell with transition Badge and Baseballbat-muffler! Thats all for a 100$ :-)

What i would like to know from the Ludwig experts in the forum is; Is this Snare a pre 1968 Drum? And what is the value of a retsored drum like this? I am not much into Ludwig Drums maybe some of you guys can help me out;-)

I can't tell if there is a serial number on the badge or not. That would help date it. With it having a baseball bat muffler, that would be 63-68 range. The felt on that muffler has been added. A replacement arm with the correct felt would help complete it. There were some keystone badge Supras with P85 strainers like yours has, but they were usually 69 issues and had the round knob mufflers. Your drum probably came with a P83 strainer. Are the hoops brass or steel (magnet test)?

No expert for sure, but glad to help. Pre serial and baseball bat most likely puts it around the '63 mark. Red felt on the muffler and a p83 strainer would be correct. Most pre serials had brass hoops. But around 64 some steel hoops start appearing.

No serial number indicates it being produced between 1960-1963. Your shell should be made of brass, but if it were made later in that frame it could possibly be made with the Ludalloy. Best way to tell on that is if the chrome has a lot of pitting. The chrome plating didn't adhere as well to the Ludalloy as it did the brass.

definitely ludalloy with that pitting but it's an early one with crimped beds. Great score!

Hi there!

Not an expert at all!! but I.M.H.O. looks like an early '60 (prob. after 61-62 according the baseball bat muffler - As Mike said, with a non-original felt-) last of pre-serial Ludalloy LM400 w/ crimp beads, probably with p83 strainer, with a "modern"replacement p85 black face part.

Not brass that's for sure first gen luddaloy1963 you mite b lucky and have cob hoops there worth more than the shell red bat muff is 100 by itself they are getting harder to find and the cob hoops re 100 each or more there impossible to find good luck

Apparently in Austria, there is a new religious sect who believe that drums are of the devil.....so many are willing to sell them off for pennies on the dollar!

I have that same drum. Very early Ludalloy shell with crimped beds.

BTW that isn't a "transition badge". That's called a "Pre-Serial Keystone". The transition badge has the Ludwig logo silk screened in blue and a non-etched keystone shaped piece of metal. It was the badge that transitioned between the WFL brand name and the Ludwig brand (used between approx. late 1958 to sometime in 1960).

That drum would be a steal for $100 by itself so anything else you got with it was essentially free.
