help with my Gretsch drums Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Loading...

Thanks very much, I'd be glad to help in anyway I can.

There's some wear on the 12" tomtom from rubbing against the snare.

Everything is original.

I remember when I bought the kit there were no holes in it whatsoever, I had to indicate the kind of spurs and tomtom mount I wanted.

Luckily I had the good sense to go for the original Gretsch hardware, even though the spurs suck big time.

From Retrosonic

Tib:Your set is a combination of the first and second Stop Sign Badges, and the 80s badge. The Badge with "That Great Gretsch Sound" was used from around 1970-1979,the the second stop sign badge that said "Drum Makers Since 1883" was used for a short while until the "Square" badge came in around 1980.Your set is interesting because it seems that is was assembled at the factory at a very transitional time. The "square" badge drum you have must have been one of the first thousand or so made in late 1979 , and it was coupled with some older stock drums that had the same Rosewood finish to make a complete set. Unfortunetly, to a collector, this isnt good. Collectors want all the same badges on their drums, especially on a Gretsch set.Value? Hard to say. I'm going to make an estimate of around $1500.In the end, its worth what someone will pay for it. Your drums sound great, I am sure of that.

SSB#1 was from '69 to '77

SQB #1 was from '77 to '78

I would guess his kit left the factory some time in 1977 when the transition from SSB#1 to SQB #1 was in affect

my guess is that all the drums have serial numbers in the 72000 range.

the bass drum will be a higher number than the toms and snare

It couldn't be `77 because of the drop G badge. If he bought them all together, it had to be `80 or later.

What's the actual purchase date on the receipt? Some people don't like to post the serial numbers from their drum's paper tags, but this could help with the dating. If you don't mind posting, you could just replace the last two digits with XX.

It is quite possible that Gretsch was installing the Drop G badges late 1979 on select drums (snares).

In reality, anything is and has been possible. Your kit is an interesting one and the documentation you have might help answer some questions.

I should have read the original post more closely.

If you remember (and have a reciept also) that you bought it in `79, then they obviously began using the drop g badge then.

Nice kit.

Do no separate these out to sell. That would be sad. Keep the family together :)
