I hadn't checked the Slingerland section of ebay for a few days, till today.I see a Slingerland Black Beauty for sale by Steve Maxwell.I know there are very few examples of these instruments known to exist.

Are they worth 19,000?Opinions,thoughts,death threats?

I guess this is for big collectors to thump their chests about to each other. ...Totally preposterous.

Everybody wants one, but in todays economy, how many of us can afford to spend close to $20,000. for a snare drum without having to refinance the house? The market for items like this is small. Very-well-to-do collectors would be the only ones able to play in that league. Working stiffs like me can only "lust in their heart" as Jimmy Carter once said.

Good luck to Steve Maxwell finding a buyer. Maybe a drummer from a rich oil family in Dubai, or one of those Japanese collectors who are willing to pay top dollar for American made collectables will scoop it up. Won't be me, or anyone else I know. That's for sure.

Too many great drums to list here!

It's only "too high" until someone pays for it. I dig Steve and honestly wish him the best on this sale. Who the heck knows what this drum would bring? No one knows until the deal is done. Does anybody remember that most bizarre Ludwig OBP Jazzfest snare deal a year or so ago by one of our own? That was a ridiculous amount of money to pay for that snare ... or was it ... ... ... The jury is still out on that one.

Steve has a pretty good track record for selling seriously slick and historically important drums and cymbals. I'm thinking he probably knows what this drum will bring to a serious collector. Like most of us, I'm a schmuck when it hits this level. I defer to the man with the most experience ... and there ain't too many of 'em on this earth with that depth of heavy duty business dealings.

Just me speaking here, but I would rather have 80 snare drums I could beat the living daylights out of than one 20K drum I would be scared to let sit in direct sunlight let alone play.............

Where do you store a 20K drum at? A safe? Do you contact the people who built the cases for the Declaration of Independence in Washington D.C????

To each his own, but not for me.

toodles

Why do you say that?...it's a high end, rare snare drum (only 14 known to be in existence) that very few can afford and your "thumping chest" and "Totally preposterous" comments, although it is within your right to express, shows your ignorance and a definite lack of understanding. The guys that I know who collect that type of snare drum (and I know a few) don't go around "thumping their chests" between their fellow collectors, they share photos and stories the same way that the other members here do. The last 5x14 Slingerland Black Beauty sold for 16,000.00 about 5 yrs. ago.

The Slingerland Black Beauty is built like a tank, the black nickel is very durable although the clear coat lacquer can get a little funky but that can be polished up or re-lacquered. The hardware does show its age on a lot of these drums but is still pretty beefy. You can display these drums in your home as direct sunlight won't hurt them in the least.
