A magnet does not stick to the snare. I personally don't know how to take the rim off. My roomate should be back later on this evening.

Your roommate is very lucky! Those are really nice pre-serial Ludwigs and appear to be in great shape.

Thank you!

You are looking for two dents inside the shell on the bottom of the shell, you could have a very valuable snare drum on your hands here.

That looks like an early Hollywood model. The drums are Ludwig super classics. There should be a date stamp inside the shells.but pre serial nunber badges dates it between 60-63.The magnet won't help in this case, since both brass and aluminum, are non-magnetic.

Take the head off the snare, and look to see if the bearing edge, appears to be bending in,toward the shell, instead of just straight. If it weighs around 9 pounds, then it's probably a Super Ludwig 400.chrome over brass shell, and depending on condition,be worth up to 900 US.

Use a magnet on the rims of all the drums. If it dosen't stick, then they're chrome over brass also. That's a very good thing.

Post some more CLEAR pics of the snare drum, inside and out.

but and its a big but, the last pre serial snare i had with crimp beds was first run ludaloy so weight also is important ....

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

A magnet wouldn't stick to the shell either way....magnets don't stick to brass or ludalloy
