How Rare Are These Board of Education Keystone Acrolites? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

They are making new ones now you know?

There was just recently a long thread about these over at the DFO...worth reading through if these interest you. It's not really a matter of how many were made but of how many survived their duty in the NYC schools and then managed to "escape into the wild" (sold, stolen, or salvaged).

I just wish they had made them with eight lugs so they'd be more unique from the 402. The main difference being the lack of chrome plating. I guess that does make a difference in sound but an eight lug like the regular acro would have been a totally different beast.

mlayton owns both a 60's Keystone and a 70's B/O.

P83 and I each own a 78 B/O with imperial lugs.

I'm sure there is at least a couple more owners on here.

Rotarded is correct! The pic he posted of the 6.5 Blue Olive model with bowties is mine. It has NYc Bd of Education stuff in various places on the drum. My 60's Keystone model has no such markings. Here it is..

That is a beautiful snare. Mike!!

Are these shells stamped Board of Education or anything? How would someone know that it is a legit B of E snare if they were purchased one? I`m curious is all...

Cheers

My 70's model has NYC BD. of ED written in large letters inside the drum with a marker. The shell and hoop is also engraved Sterling High School, which was in Brooklyn.

My 60's model has no such markings however.

So, is it the depth of the snare that determines if it`s a B of E acrolite?

Cheers

I don't have any proof of that. The 6.5 Acrolites were not cataloged before the 6.5 Black Galaxy Acrolites came about. "Word is" that they were special ordered NYC drums. There may be some keystone models out there with the markings. Mine just isn't one of them.
