So I go to the Buffalo Drum Outlet, the best place in our region for a nice assortment of vintage and new equipment, and this older guy had schlepped in his older beautiful Ludwig Vistalites in blue, 22, 20 and 18 inch bass drums, I think a 13" tom and a 16 ft and matching snare. He rarely used the 18, and it was perfect except for some rust on the claws. He said he wanted to trade the set in for this vintage Rogers in the back row. I asked if he ever went to VDF. No, the internet isn't his thing. I said he could probably get some serious offers for this kit. He just didn't know about this internet. So I'm sure that Buffalo Drum Outlet was pretty happy to trade, they do have to make a profit. But it is just so hard to help some people. Oh well. If you want a really nice Vistalite in light blue, give them a call. They also had a nice Gretsch 3-ply, and a full assortment of older 70's Ludwigs, stuff I cannot remember, and several 60's snares. I haven't seen the BDO so stacked with equipment in quite some time.
I tried to help somebody get a better deal. Last viewed: 2 hours ago
Paul ran into an individual that was selling off the collection of a family member that passed. He has a seriously large cache from that one deal. Paul is a GREAT guy to deal with. I've dealt with him for years no matter where I happen to be living at the time ... I hop around the country often.
Which Roger kit did the old man grab?
I'm sorry, as soon as he said Rogers, I didn't care. For some irrational reason, I don't care for Rogers drums. I don't know why, I'm sure they are nice drums. I agree, Paul is a great guy to deal with. He jumps over backwards to try and help everyone. He'll have two phones clutched under each ear with his shoulders, with a pen poking calculators, discuss equipment with a customer and pull parts out all at one time! I enjoy seeing an entrepreneur with that much enthusiasm. I don't see it at that level very often.
Yep. That's Paul.
It's ok to dislike a Vintage drum. It took me YEARS to come to grips with Slingerland. Nothing screams old man cheesy drum like that word ... Slingerland. Just look at it. It is so lame looking and sounding.
"Slin - Ger - Land"
BUT, when I did finally wise up and try the drums out ... whoa momma. Freekin' awesome drums.
Maybe one day you might find yourself behind a pristine 65 Rogers Red Glass kit and take it for a spin. Who knows. It might tickle you ... and it might not. Thankfully, we are all built a bit differently.
Hey! Easy on the Slingerlands, I like those. Maybe someday with the Rogers.
I must say, I'm not much of a Rogers fan either. My reasons are mostly superficial though. While they are great sounding drums, I can't get past their lug design. Maybe it's because my first kit was an 80's Tama Superstar, which had lugs that were strikingly similar in appearance to the Rogers Beavertail design.
Also, on a related note, I have a Fullerton era Rogers script badge KOA kit for sale.
When I was a young drummer (back in the 70s), I dreamed of owning them all. I started with a Gretsch set, then bought a new Ludwig "Rock Duo" set in pink champagne in 1971 or 72. But, I also day-dreamed about playing Slingerlands, Rogers, too. And of course ended up with Pearl in 1978. I could see the up-side to all of them.
Hey, wait a minute! I'm 57 now... and nothing has changed! I love them all!!!
:)

BTW -- I've never been to the Buffalo Drum Outlet, but would like to make the trip someday! When I retire, I plan on making some of those "road trips!" And all I'll have to do is leave plenty of time for my wife to shop the local Goodwill's and garage/yard/rummage sales!!

" I have to say it's very hard to "help" someone who isn't asking for your help, and sometimes people just have an idea in their head and won't stray from it. My friend was going to spend between 500 - 600 for a new kit for his son at GC one of those Sound Percussion, "complete set-up" cheap cymbals and all.
I took him to Buff Drum Outlet showed him some used kits, brought him over to my house showed him some vintage stuff, got on CL and Ebay and showed him that he could get a decent quality set of tubs that need a little TLC and I'd be willing to help, and then we could put together cymbals and hardware piecemeal. I'd even lend him a few things until he could afford. I had a few cheeper stands which I could sell him if he wanted as well. This way the kid (15 yrs old) would have something decent, with at least a resale value if he decides to sell.
I am sure you know the end of the story - he buys the SP kit anyway - fast forward 3 years, the kid is going off to college and lost interest in drums, so he asks "how much can I get for the SP kit?" - I said 100 bucks!
1966 Kent Kit
1969 Ludwig Standard Kit
1970 Rogers Power Tone Kit
1970's Ludwig Vistalite Kit
1994 Yamaha Maple Custom
2010 Yamaha Maple Custom
28 assorted snares (including some real crap)
and 1 really nice K Zildjian Istanbul

I have had almost an identical experience as yours, my friend still has that horrible sound percussion kit and he still wants what he paid for them 5 years ago !!?
