Ideas on 20" floor tom convert to Bass Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I've converted a couple of floor toms to bass drums quite easily. You can buy a pair of 60's Ludwig spurs (or repro Danmar spurs) and they would fit into 2 of the 3 floor tom leg mounts. The 3rd mount will sit on top and could be used as a cymbal stand with an L arm. You can buy some maple hoops, claws and rods of your choice and if you so desired, throw on a Gibraltar bass drum riser on the batter side (mine was necessary since it was a 16" floor tom). For the batter head, I would use a Remo Powerstroke 3 and a coated Ambassador with felt strip on the reso side. I went so far as to add a consolette rail to mine and a hoop-mount clamp with L arm for the ride cymbal.

Here is a pic of one of them.

I see you have wood hoops? my sling tom has SS hoops would I keep these on? would any generic wood bass hoop fit? I'd have to get longer screws to I think.

I just bought some wood hoops online...picked up the claws and ordered longer tension rods.

On your other link about the Dunnett tom mount, Purdie Shuffle posted a link to an entire package that would let you keep your metal hoops. Check it out.

Wow, EM Drummer, that is a sweet little set up. I already have a Gilbralter riser on my 18" Gretsch bass drum I could swap out. The old Ludwig spur idea would work too, as I have a old 60's bass drum I don't use I could borrow the spurs from. Hmmmm my 18" floor Tom already has a Ambassador on the batter side and I think with a felt strip on both sides might do the trick. I really don't want to go to the expense of buying 18" wood hoops, claws, and rods, although it would look great. The new Gretsch kits with the 16" bass drums that can collapse and expand have regular Tom type hoops on them and seem to work fine. I am going to see if I can make what I have work. My 16"x18" is a beautiful Champabne sparkle and I have the matching 14"x14" floor and snare. I only have a 13" tom that matches but keeping a eye out for a 12". I could use the 13" if I had to.

Hey Vibes...we have so many options with building different configurations for drums. These are cheapie MIJ shells with the cheap stick-on wrap, so I didn't care if I drilled them out for a consolette rail. Your Gibraltar riser should work if you can get it to clamp on to a metal hoop. It did cost a little bit to get the wood hoops, claws and tension rods, but as you mentioned...it looks good! As for heads...actually on this one...I had a 16" Pinstripe head and I cut the middle out as to leave an inner ring from the 2nd ply, mimicking a Powerstroke 3. The sky's the limit, really. Sounds like you're on your way.

Thanks guys for the help, I'm going to call the drum factory tues, see what they have to say, I was looking closer at my 20" the lugs are pretty close to the rim right now, I fear that by putting on a hoop, the lug on the drum will be right up to it with no tension room,

I use one of these every week. I paid nothing like that price in the ad. It works better on some hoops than others. Currently on a 16" floor tom and it works perfectly. The ISS mount clamps onto the rim. The adapter plate attaches to the mount. The legs go into your floor tom mount blocks.

Slingerland,

Many guys just use fold down spurs and put them into the floor tom brackets as mentioned and this generally works well. The problem I fear that you might have is you most likely have four leg brackets and you can't do fold out bass drum spurs from the 3 and 9 o'clock position. Clip on spurs will do the trick but only if you convert to wood hoops.

Concerning wood hoops, your lugs will not be too close for tuning purposes as a.) the hoop stops at the drum head collar and b.) the tension rods extend to the end of the claw. The only issue you may have is that the tension rods will enter the tom at a bit if an angle to accommodate the thickness of the hoop. This may make tensioning a little tighter than normal, but it generally works. By using wood hoops you then have something to which you can attach a pedal. Certainly no particular need for a riser with a 20".

When I was in college I had an 18" floor tom that I converted. I used it as both a floor tom and a bass drum depending on the gig and that varied multiple times a week as I never turned down an opportunity for a gig. To speed up the process, I generally only used a bass drum hoop on the batter head. I found that a single ply resonant worked fine for both the tom and the bass set up. That made it a matter of minutes to convert.

Ircollura, that looks great. Can we get a pic of your spurs, or how you are stabilizing the drum for the pedal and front. Are you using a riser?
