I'm after a stainless steel supraphonic snare drum Last viewed: 1 day ago

Hi there. I wondered if anybody can help.

I'm after a stainless steel Ludwig supraphonic snare drum either vintage or a replica / updated modern one. We all know that it was John Bonham's favoured snare - why is it when I look for one online I can only find brass, copper and aliminium supraphonic snares? Have they completely disappeared out of the market? I know people rave on about the Ludwig Black Beauty but I do not like how the sound is more condensed and muffled (obviously for drummers that like more subtlety), I don't think they are as sharp as the stainless steel supraphonic.

If anybody can point me in the right direction towards a Ludwig stainless steel supraphonic snare I would very much appreciate it.

Kind Regards

Jimmy

Jimmy JHB Used a 402 Ludalloy which is aluminum not a stainless steel snare drum in fact ludwig until recently never made a stainless snare drum except for the marching line of stainless steel drums. They came in sizes 10x14" or 12x15"

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

The chrome-plated Supras were originally brass, and since around 1964 were Ludalloy... a/k/a aluminum. There were apparently a few steel-shelled prototypes, but unlikely they'd have made their way into artist's hands.

Ludwig does offer some stainless steel snares, but they're not Supras.

Ludwig did make SS drums... just not snares until recently. All of the above is correct.

Pleased to meet you!

I think I saw an article not too long ago that identified Bonham's snare as being "stainless steel". That was wrong of course, as pointed out above, but may contribute to the confusion. You want an aluminum shell 402 model to get that JHB sound (at least that's the first step).

the chief is a titanium snare.

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Ha ha, thanks guys. I feel a bit silly about that mistake now.

I'm saving up for a Legacy kit with the Bonham 2002 Paiste Cymbals, but I want to turn it into a combination Bonham / Keith Moon kit with the cymbals that give the great washy Moon sound, put a few extra rack toms on the Legacy kit. So complete Bonham set up plus some cymbals a bit higher up like what Moon used to play. Also getting a Ludwig Speed King kick pedal, can't play double bass because I'm too ingrained in using the high hat, but I'm learning to move my right foot faster. I would also like some rototoms too.

Cool! I would look about for an old kit though, but those 'Legacy Classic' kits are nice. I've goofed off with a few at a friends store.

Rototoms... well, the last time I had some Rototoms I put them in the middle of the street in front of the house, doused them with copious amounts of lighter fluid, threw a match at 'em and danced around them naked as they burned.

The neighbors weren't amused.

My Rototoms would survive that attack Fish. The heads wont. They way I set mine up allowed me to hit five different toms with one stick...in less than a second !i

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!
