Intro 4 newbie with 2 vintage kits Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

Hello all. I'm a Bass player who inherited 2 vintage kits (1946 Slingerland kit and an early 60's Gretsch kit, a 50's Ludwig chrome snare and a 1967 Ludwig chrome snare drum) when my father passed away. He was a pro drummer all his life here in Canada.

I was going to sell the kits but after looking around this site I think I may restore the kits first and then decide. The Slingerland kit is in rough shape. The Gretsch kit also has some issues. I really didn't realize that restoring was an option. After poking around the site I realize that they can be restored and would be worth much more if they were.

I have a feeling that if I do restore these drums I won't have the heart to sell them. I'm sure I'll have many questions regarding the restoration of these two very cool kits.

If your dad meant as much to you as those drums did to him, keep 'em, restore as best as you can and enjoy!

Welcome to the forum, bass players are allowed as long as they don't complain about tempo. ;)

If you feel the need to get rid of that 50's Ludwig snare, give me a shot at it if possible.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I always vote on cleaning them up and playing them. Then you can decide if they are for you. There are a lot of people here that can help with how to get them going. But please post pics....we love drum **** around here.

If ever there was a group of guys waiting for photos, it's now!! Post 'em :)

I'd keep the drums though if they were my father's. Keep em in the family ...

Wow. Great response. Pics will be coming. The Slingy set is here with me. The Gretsch set is at a friends as my space is limited. I also have an 80's Tama Artstar II kit but of course their not as interesting as the two vintage kits.

I will be selling the Ludwig snare. Maybe the both of them. All these drums were used to play gigs night after night for many years in smoky clubs in Toronto. There have been some mods on some of the drums (unfortunately) such as holes being drilled in one of the snare drums to accommodate a different throw off/strainer and other such mods. I'm staring at the Slingy Floor Tom as I type.

Both kits were in a club where there was a fire. The Slingys have had the shell wrap removed (uuuggg). I know, that hurt. The Gretsch are more intact with only the floor tom having some wrap damage due to the fire.

My schedule is a little tight the next few weeks but I'll post some pics tomorrow (Sat.) of the drums that are here at the moment. Thanks for the response. I haven't even touched on the cymbals. There's got to be some old Ziljians also.
