Intro 4 newbie with 2 vintage kits Last viewed: 33 minutes ago

Axel - Don't feel too terrible, you're still sitting on over $1000. worth of drums (and that's not counting the Gretsch kit which we haven't seen/evaluated,) as they sit. What I was trying to tell you is; if they were all in original condition, the resale number would be more like $3000. for the Radio Kings and the snares. 'Original condition' counts for a lot when it comes to resale value.

Can't wait to see the Gretsch drums, please post some pix when you have it in your possession.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Hey Drum dudes. All your comments have been very helpful. That one drum (small kik drum) that one of you mentioned might be a Gretsch drum is certainly perplexing me. The drummer in the band I play in said it may be a Sligerland but I really don't think so. He told me to take the skins off and look inside to see if it was a one ply drum or to see if there are any other clues inside. I was prepared to do so and then remembered that there are no drum keys in my house. After growing up in a house where you couldn't take 3 steps without seeing one about, there are now none.

So, I peeked inside where the badge use to be and low and behold, a date. Sept., something, 1951. Voila. And. The hole where the badge use to be has a dark stain barely visible. An oval shape. The lugs look like Gretsch but Gretsch never had an oval shaped badge. Slingerland did however the lugs don't look like Slingerland lugs. So now I'm really confused. Could be a shell from one co. with hardware from another or it might be from a different co. altogether. Not Gretsch or Slingerland. I must say, being a gear type person this has all captured my attention.

Sometimes I wonder where I left my brains. I work p/t at a music store and forgot that I may need a drum key so I haven' removed the heads (almost called them skins; showing my age). From what I can tell by peeking inside, the wood is not a reddish colour like the inside of the 40s Slingerland kit I have. I now know that that would be mahogany.

And because it seems like there may have been an oval badge on this drum at one time, I to thought that could mean it's a Slingerland. The lugs look like Gretsch though. I've attached a larger photo.

Definitely a Gretsch, and an 18x14? Big money....

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Date stamped shell, oval badge....unfortunately I'm thinking Slingerland shell with Gretsch snare lugs. Those aren't Gretsch t's and claws. Plus Slingerland and Gretsch snare lugs have the same hole spacing.

Didn't read properly. Well, it's still an 18x14 shell, that's got bass drum legs. Gotta be worth a few pennies.
