Right, Ludwig's wraps were integral to the shell construction until 1969 or so.

Your only problem here is going to be finding a snare stand that is low enough for you to set it up on your kit (unless you sit really high). Some folks take a cheaper stand and cut down the receiving shaft so the basket shaft goes lower. Others will get a multi-clamp, attach it to the receiving shaft, and then use the other side of the clamp for the basket shaft.

BTW- I have a 1967 Ludwig 10" x 15" like yours, but with small classic lugs instead of the long ones. Just one thing, be patient with tuning it and don't get frustrated. It will take some time to get a great sound out of it, but worth it. The 'crack' you can get out of this monster is unbelievable. It's just that the "largeness" of the drum tends to require more tweaking than usual. Experiment with different weights of heads and different brands, if possible. I find that Ludwig drums like Ludwig brand heads, but others will disagree. I run a heavy coated on the batter and a medium snare side. But I would like to try out some thinner weights to see what happens. There is quite a bit of info about head choices on this forum.

Tension adjustment on the snare wires themselves can get especially tricky with a drum this deep. Remember, these were originally marching drums not exactly designed with resonance and sensitivity in mind. Next time I have a chance to putter with it I am going to try to rig up my 42-strand set to see if there is a difference with playing ghost notes.

Beautiful drum!

PJN1375, that is excellent info! Very appreciated, thank you.

Any more advice you can give? Im all ears!

I did the magnet test last night. Rims, lugs and strainer are NOT steel. Jump For Joy

the agony of waiting for parts to arrive!

From Shawn M

why do I have a baaad feeling im missing a piece for the butt end or I have a wrong butt end for the strainer?

All your missing is the single threaded screw and washer on one end, and the two small screws and nuts and washers on the other. You have a P-87 strainer, and a P-34 butt. These require special wires. Here's a pic. These are NOS and for sale, unfortunately they're for a 14" snare and won't fit your 15.

There is no P-87 butt. The P-34 butt is original on your drum. There was another option, it was the P-32 butt. The P-32 butt is the standard in the 60s (string.) Unfortunately the mounting holes are not interchangeable between the P-32 and P-34.

Unless you want to drill holes (ouch) you need to return the wires, and try to find the adjustable wires like in my first pic. for a classic P-87 with a P-34 butt, for a 15" inch snare. If the wires you ordered look like the ones in this pic. you can probably just use string and attach it in the screw holes of the P-34 butt. The correct wires are difficult to find, unfortunately. Good luck.
