It's the Display Your Ringo Kit Thread! Last viewed: 1 hour ago

From drummer2012

Correct me if I'm wrong - I've been calling my Ringo set a "bop" thinking that's the abbreviation for oyster black pearl/ black oyster pearl. I know there's a blue oyster pearl. So what's proper? Next step would be to take the time to figure out how to post pics, and take some good ones. My 67 downbeat is all original, and quite clean if i do say so myself!

While the oyster pearls were officially called oyster black pearl and oyster blue pearl, it is my understanding that the accepted acronym for oyster black pearl is OBP and the accepted acronym for oyster blue pearl is BOP.

I hope to see pics of your kit soon.

Lynn

Actually, Ludwig had two names for the Black and for the Blue version. One was Oyster Black/Blue Pearl and the other was Black/Blue Oyster Pearl. The name change hit about 1970ish.

Great looking kits guys!

drumfactory - That pic of the OBP stable... wow!

orangemi - I've always loved that pic... Indeed, that was a mess up whereby the wrong kit was delivered and Ringo used the WMP kit for rehearsal. I'm going from memory here, but I also believe that Ringo was still using his downbeat outfit at the time.

Maybe not Ringos but Ive had a love affair with them for a very long time. Sounds weird huh? Tom

here's my current stash of black oysters. Only the Junior kit is a rewrap. I have enough correct hardware (buck rogers,1123's,1400's) for 4 complete Beatle kits including the Zildjians but not yet ready to put any up for sale.

Not really a Ringo kit, these are 14x24, 8x12 and 16x16 (I added a 9x13 later.) But this wrap is probably the truest re-issue of Oyster Black, it's the Black Abalone finish on the Guitar Center Ltd Ed. kits from 2011.

It does look like there's some blue in there, might be an optical illusion and certainly not a deal-breaker for me. I do like the 'clear' sections that show through to the wood, as did the original wrap way back when. Of course it's not mahogany underneath, these are the oak Keystone shells and are lighter in color. But it does add that elusive brown-ness that only the original wrap had.

Here's an action shot of them:
