Okay, I have a sept 7th 1961, Ludwig 8-lug, WFL classic throw-off, knob style muffle, blue sparkle snare. I belive Jazz festival snaredrums have the p-85, so if it's got a classic throw off is it a Buddy Rich? did ludwig call it a buddy even when he was playing other brands?

I think the "Buddy Rich Super Classic" model is WFL. When they transitioned to Ludwig it was just called the Super Classic. Could be wrong, usually am.

30's Radio King - 26, 13, 13, 16
49 - WFL Ray McKinley - 26, 13, 16
58 - Slingerland Duco
58 - Slingerland Krupa Deluxe
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 20, 12, 14
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 22 (need), 13, 16
And some others..

so would this be "transition era" (1961 and with a WFL throw off) or do you think the throw off has been swapped out?

it looks to be the same vintage as the drum itself, it's actually missing the "baseball bat" lever and has a little allen scew in there. and I had always thought that the classic throw offs were for individualy adjustable snares

I do not intend on selling this drum so value is just to wow other drummers, but does anybody have a clue to it's worth?

You need longer snare wires.....

Puresound.com sells the correct ones!

They used up the WFL parts after they became Ludwig, so there were some snares and some stands that bore the WFL name under the Ludwig moniker. It's not a Buddy snare.

Buddy had split WFL in 1959 and headed to... Rogers! The drum you have here is NOT the Buddy Rich Super Classic.. plus .. I can't see the butt on your drum, but to be a Buddy Rich back in the day of his endorsement with WFL/Ludwig, the snare needs to specifically have the P88 butt and fully extended snares. Otherwise, the drums are very similar excepting the painted interior on yours. I'll attach a couple pics of my 1955 Buddy Rich Super Classic. Enjoy!!

I don't think it has to have the p88...I'm pretty sure it is still a buddy rich super classic if it has the p32 and is pre 1960

You are quite mistaken my friend as Buddy played his WITH the P88 and with ALL CHROME hardware, never nickel. Now that said, one could get the Buddy Rich Super Classic snare drum with the P32.. ( and I have seen many ) .. but again, it's not THE model that Buddy played. Semantics?!... nah, accuracy as to what the ACTUAL model Buddy played was! Check my pics!

Jazz Fest drums have a P-83 strainer/P-32 butt. Most are 5x14 but some examples in 5 1/4-5 1/2 have shown up,probably Barret Deems or Classic shells drilled by mistake. These drums usually but not always have off set lugs(not centered)Your drum is a Classic model(not Buddy Rich Super Classic) and has a P-87 strainer and should have a P-88 butt although some have a factory installed P-32 butt. These drums also use extended snare wires that extend beyond the bearing edges. The muffler may or may not be original as in this period Ludwig was using red felt baseball bat mufflers.

Your drum also would be considered a "pre serial number"snare NOT a transitional period drum.Transitional drums have a blue and brass Ludwig badge and were made from 59'to 60'with some possible overlap but not into 61.Hope this helps...nice drum.

I knew it was not a transition badged snare, and I was wondering if the muffle was correct, I have a supra with no serials and it has the red felt baseball bat type. the blue sparkle has the script type butt (p-32 and looks to be factory installed) and is 5 1/2" the lug casings are centered.

so it looks like I need to get a hold of a tone control, snares and a lever for the throw off...

thanks!
