Joe Morello Ludwig kit on Ebay, questionable provenance?? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Loading...

Photos are nice to have.

There are real valid reasons for not having photos showing the artist, the drums, and the "new owner." Establishing bullet proof provenance of any artist owned kit is difficult sometimes. I am not voting either way.

I have two artist owned snare drums. Provenance on the one drum, is bullet proof. And no, I do not have pics of the artist signing the drum. Given the circumstances, it would have been disrespectful and extremely rude to take pictures at that moment. My other artist owned drum, has no real provenance other than the word of the dealer I from whom I aquired the drum. His word says it came to him through the son of a particular well known drummer. OK, thats fine. On one drum, I have solid artist connection. On the other, I dont, and am not likely to ever have that. Nor will I pursue it.

As for these Ludwigs, I have no opinion either way. People who have a personal connection with the seller, will know. Everyone else will make their own guesses, assumptions, accusations. One thing is fairly certain, during times when quality control was in the toilet, and poorly made drums were being shipped out to stores for retail sales, endorsed artists werent being treated much better.

Until someone proves me wrong,...he had ONE BO/pointy kit !!

Well....that sells it for me....its a fake. Look at the seem on the floor tom in the pic with Joe on the kit....there's rivets there! This kit on ebay.....no rivets on the floor toms. And I believe that OddBall is correct, Joe only had one B/O badge kit that I can recall as well.

After having personal instruction from Joe Morello himself, I don't believe for one second that this was one of Joe's kits. First, the sets pictured are totally different, bass spurs, rivets on the pictured floor tom and not on the set for sale etc... I never saw any of Joe's sets that looked that bad and I've seen quite a few of them. The intials on the bass drum don't mean anything either, you can have those made up from just a picture of his drums. Also, Joe had signed alot of things for me during my instruction, drum heads, old Ludwig ads of him sitting at the kit etc... I had just replaced the head on the Ludwig snare drum that I took to my instruction and I had Joe sign it for me back in 2007. I'll post some pic's of it. He always said this to me, "promise me I won't see this stuff for sale anywhere". I can still hear him saying those words to me. I have various e-mails from him and his wife Jean about scheduling etc... and I still have their phone number. I think this kit is a total fake, it's someone out to make alot of money on an "almost worthless" drum set. I'll tell you what, show me the "yellow invoice" from Joe that states he sold you this drum set, then we'll talk.

This is exactly where I'm coming from.....where's the proof? There is none. Just another person trying to make a buck off a great drummer's name now that he has passed away. Cooked Egg

Very sad, yes very sad indeed. Good luck to the poor soul who falls for this scam. How does the saying go? Oh yes, "a fool and his money are soon to part ways." Well, you'd have to be a fool to think this was the real deal AND worth this much money. Laughing H:cool:

I think they mean the actual tom arm. If you look closely the tom arm has the current modular T-bolts at the angle adjustment point. I still say there is no way this is the real deal though......Mind Blowi

Yeah in the photo with Joe, the B/O tom badge is on the second panel from the Mount, where the advert Rack Tom is clearly further around, meaning it was possibly a 2nd Rack tom originally from a 5 piece kit. This is not the same drum!!!

It is possible that maybe Joe sold this kit to his pupil, but maybe he was moving it through from another pupil. Maybe Joe did some deals with Ludwig on behalf of his pupils, or baby sat pupils thru purchases, but based on pictorial evidence so far, this is not his actual kit.

I sent an email to the seller last night questioning the provenance of the kit. Here is my "question" via ebay as follows word for word:

Dear rezdrumsfla,

Do you have any proof of your claims that this kit was actually owned by Joe? And I mean more than your customers word for it. Are there copies of the bill of sale that Joe would have written to your customer? Some thing just aren't adding up to me in this listing. Joe always took excellent care of his equipment. This kit is pretty rough. Also, the kit you show Joe playing is a newer kit than the one you are selling. It is not the same kit. Do you have photos of Joe playing THIS actual kit? I'd like some better provenance to prove it was Joe's actual kit rather than some guy's word before I plunk down 10g's on a kit.

I am waiting for a reply still....when I get one, I'll post the reply word for word as well. This should be interesting.....LoLoLoLo
