Just curious why this thread vanished!? Last viewed: 5 minutes ago

Somebody started a thread last week, with regards to what type of kit you play and to post pics of yourself playing your kit. A few pics of members playing their respective kits were posted. Where is this thread? Was it moved to another section or was it simply removed? If so, WHY!?!?Hmmmm

From Purdie Shuffle

Yup... that would be a good place to have a look! THANKS Purdie Shuffle! Thing is, David and I HAVE TO start "pruning" a lot of the fluff threads/posts.. not all... some. It all depends on what it is. This would be an excellent time for me to make mention of this too:

ATTACHING PICTURES: PLEASE DO NOT imbed pictures within the text box of your post... use the attachment system/manager. If pics are imbedded within the text box, I have to delete the post. There are a couple reasons for this:

It takes up too much space when you imbed, and makes the thread very difficult to read. Also, we can't archive the pics when they are not an attachment, and the MAIN purpose of the VDF is preserving the history/knowledge of vintage drums. That's the reason a lot of the eBay/craigslist links get deleted too... not too mention the fact that they always end up as DEAD LINKS eventually, which helps no one.

I did make a FORUM WIDE announcement/post on this very subject, but for whatever reason, the announcement didn't show. We are looking into the why on that as there is an issue with the software. In the interim, perhaps the members will see/read this post. THANKS for your understanding on this!

the announcement did show for at least a while because i read it myself. ive always used the manage attachments here,so it wasn't an issue for me. in fact, i don't even know how to add them any other way, which is good.

Hey Mike!

Ah... so it DID show! I noticed a little afterwards that it wasn't anywhere to be seen on the main forum, but it was still showing within the "moderation control panel"... and it is still there now. It's just not on the main forum. Gotta keep lookin' at what happened there. THANKS for letting me know that it did show, albeit... briefly. Oh, by the way... THANKS for using the attachment system too Mike!

I've never used the attach facility because I maintain my own website with my own permanent storage (triple backed up -- naturally ). So I just type inline image tags and I'm done (I'm also a fast touch typist, and reasonably fluent in bbs, html, c++, etc -- except it would show my age to give all the rest of the languages).

Is that a problem for your own backing up system?

I noticed a "Glitch" here late last week... Could not access the site for about 2 hours... (I think last Wed ? US time).. tried to get in via several links to no avail.. even did a google to see if it was a reported problem,, and that came back positive. When I finally did get on I noticed one recent posted thread with no substance.. just a blank.. Hope this helps in the scheme of things..

Cheers

Tommy - I looked for your post first, but couldn't find it, so I just used the link to Dave's post.

I have been embedding photos in my posts because I thought by using Photobucket as the host, it wouldn't take up extra bandwidth here on this end. I guess I had that one backwards. So images linked from Photobucket take up more bandwidth when embedded here at VDF? Hmmm, I would have thought the opposite. I'll start using the thumbnails again.

I have a feeling that it's more an archive issue than space issue. But, I do believe that the space Tommy is speaking of is the added 'k' of pics to what would just be a text entry. The pics are most likely put on a storage end which has a separate path than the text. They are kept on two different storage items (drives). That would be the way I would set it up, and my guess is Tommy's got it a bit more refined than my sight. Pics on one backup path and text on another. Definitely more efficient.

PS ... Your picture attach thread announcement is back. It comes and goes. I've seen it there four or five times yesterday and twice this morn.
