Tommy - I looked for your post first, but couldn't find it, so I just used the link to Dave's post.I have been embedding photos in my posts because I thought by using Photobucket as the host, it wouldn't take up extra bandwidth here on this end. I guess I had that one backwards. So images linked from Photobucket take up more bandwidth when embedded here at VDF? Hmmm, I would have thought the opposite. I'll start using the thumbnails again.John

RogerSling got here before I did, and he is quite correct! That said though, I want to mention that your pics were never a problem as you take the time to SIZE THEM, thus they generally don't blow the thread all out of proportion and make it difficult to navigate/read. That's why I usually don't DELETE yours. Most guys imbed these GIANTILE pics that just destroy the thread. Then, there is the archiving issue, and the attachment system allows us to archive/store all these great pics of vintage drums for history/posterity, and or later use. When the pics are imbedded, they will eventually disappear.

RogerSling!... good to know that the announcement DID show. Mlayton said the same. What's odd is that it comes and goes... that's what we have to figure out.

First off, Thanks Tommyp and the other moderators!! Great site and have learned a bunch.

What size and DPI settings are the best for this board? I've been using 72 DPI and cropped size. I use Photoshop to post pics so just let me know what is the best and will use that.

... and what you have been doing is superb then! Thing is, there are parameters/limits as to file size when using the attachment manager.. so .. if your pics weren't prepped/sized correctly, you would know! The physical size isn't so much the issue though... it's the amount of pixels. For example: I post up pics that are 1080 X 810, but the actual size of the file is 112KB or even less. That way, the pic is LARGE when one views it, but SMALL in pixel count. By the way, I am THE moderator... so THANKS for the kind words!

Wherever or however you store your pics is of no consequence. Dropbox is no exception... that would be fine! The thing is to NOT imbed them within the text box. We are looking for the membership to use the attachment system for pics. Agreed, it does take a little more "work" to prep the files for upload, but it's worth it in the end for the ease of navigation/reading of the threads/posts, as well as the ability for us to archive them too!

Yes, I dont like the threads with the huge pics that you have to scroll up,down,right and left. They just dont need to be that big. Im still confused though on difference between file size and pixels. I used to set my camera on email size for the pics but usually have to take them to paint and resize them. Then one day I accidentally had the camera set on 3 megapixels. The pictures took just a few seconds longer to down load but they do not need to be resized and when you click on them in the thread they look nice. You can even click them one more time and it will zoom in perfect. This is how I did the last few pics in the Rogers re-wrap thread. I hope that is ok with everyone because it works good for me. I dont care much for putting my pictures on other web sites, I like to take them from my own computer.

And if the pics are coming from sites like photo bucket, wont they disapear from VDF if the user deletes them from photo bucket? Isnt that what you are trying to avoid?

I hope this make since, I was in a hurry when I wrote this.

Yup... it did make sense! Thing is though: Once the pic is an ATTACHMENT HERE, it will NOT go away. What I was saying was that it doesn't matter how/where you are storing those pics, as long as they are put up here as an attachment. If a Photobucket or Dropbox LINK is used, then yes... they will indeed eventually disappear. As an ATTACHMENT they will remain stored in a special folder here at the VDF.

Your pics are of course FINE Jeff. They are attachments and an excellent size for viewing!! However you get there is up to you, and it sounds like you found your method!
