Just getting started on a 60's Ludwig set Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I imagine these were usually whit interiors. Someone here can say for sure but I would probably reaping them white just to make them look the best they can to original because those are nice drums! Looking good so far!

You're on the way. Benjamin Moore has a white paint similar to original; can't remember the name, but any white paint will do--Ludwig used whatever they could get their hands on. Definitely grab that hoop & T's claws from JC, find 2 more on ebay or from someone here. Sand & spray the back hoop. You can use it without inlay for the time being. Bottom hoops for the toms, either used or new, & new heads all around. I've got a Ludwig logo for the front head when you get to that point.

I've got a Club Date kit with these sizes--they're great. You might want to keep your eyes open for a 12x15 SBP marching drum--these convert to a nice sized floor tom to go with the larger bass & rack tom. It may be a while before you find one with center lugs, but stranger things have happened.

It's great you're bringing these back to life--lots of people would have looked at them & seen only junk. Pretty good for a guitar player. There's hope for you yet........marko

Ah well dang Jeff, my BD is 22"!

Bummer!

I must have missed it if you list the sizes. For some reason I thought yours was a 20. I do have the four t-rods but better measure them to see if they will work.

Dang nab it, thought I was gonna be of some help!!!!

This weekend I didn't end up getting a bunch of time to work on the kit but I was able to go ahead and get replacement heads ordered, strip the remaining drums of their hardware and get them soaking in the vinegar bath, and get the BD hoop sanded and painted with some Rustoleum black satin spray paint.

Just a couple of pics...

Going to be traveling next week, so hopefully next weekend I can get the interiors repainted and get them all put back together.

Nice cleanup job. Yeah sky blue pearl club dates got me hooked initially. My SBP 14" floor tom is my all-time favorite. Keep us posted.

Those are going to look great. The interior should be white. You can see where you removed the Bass spur mounts and lugs the white. Someone here might have some old SBP you can possibly cut some hoop inlays. Just plain black hoops won't look bad at all until you get it all together. You can always buy some inlay strips but they will be a little brighter blue. You can get some Vintage SBP inlays from jammin Sam's. That's a really nice set!

I had sams send me a sample of the sbp wrap and it was no where close to my vintage Ludwigs. Just to let you know.

Slowly but surely, making good progress here. I've got all the drums cleaned and polished up with Novus and the interiors re-painted white. All the hardware has gone through one vinegar soak, though I'm not totally happy with how all of them came out, some are still a little dull. But I got the new heads on...thought I'd share a photo or two...

The floor tom is the one that has needed the most work. The wrapping was peeling pretty bad and has had duct tape holding the bottom together for probably more than a decade. So I've been doing re-gluing and clamping one spot at a time as well as a few goo-gone treatments to get the tape remnants off.

After some final touches on the hardware, which should just be another day or so of work, I guess I'll start on the hunt for the hardware to do resonant heads on each of them.

I love the way they've come out though! They're like a "Sky Grey Pearl" instead of "Sky Blue Pearl". :)
