Hello all, thought I'd share these here. My vintage knowledge doesn't go back this far. Please tell me what I've gotten into.
just got 40s Gretsch set, tell me what you see Last viewed: 1 hour ago
You got a 1940's Gretsch set from a time when they were using different lugs, shells, & strainer. Gretsch called these lugs "Broadkaster". (They are known informally as Rocket lugs, a misnomer). The shells are ply w/ reinforcement rings. The snare tension hoops are not original, & neither are the floor tom leg brackets. The snare hoops should be heavy cast stick choppers. It's a beautiful finish, & very unique kit, at a good price.
And a very cool looking virgin BD !!

Very nice drums - I was looking at those as well.
Congratulations!
Very cool drums what's the name of that wrap color? I like it.
Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

The kit looks re-wrapped. Bearing edges are pretty flat on rocket lug drums also. Shells are usually 3 ply and sound pretty good. Too bad bass drum is single tension. I don't think the parts are worth 500 bucks on this set. I'd value the three drums at about half the seller's price. I have owned a few of these sets in the past.
Just 2 weeks ago I sold a Gretsch snare from this era that was stripped down to the natural wood sometime in the past, & amateurishly refinished in clear poly for $405,(so the snare alone on this set has some value). The snare sounded great , even w/ bearing edges designed for Calf. There's also nothing wrong w/ a single tension bass. Plus, (Any brass Round Badge alone regularly sells for $80+). Like I said, You got a good deal.
(BEC, please contact me the next time you have a 40's RB snare, floor tom. bass, & cymbal for $250)

Hey Bun, $500.00 isn't that what you got for the Wmp kit you had with the 28"bass drum a few years ago? and yours was all original.
tdennis, I sold my last rocket lug set at the Chicago Show last year for a grand.
4 drums, 28,16,13, and 7x14 snare drum.
All drums were double tension. All drums had all parts. All drums were original wrap and had 100% original parts. It took me two years to find a buyer.
I said 250 because the parts aren't worth that on the CL set, a lot of parts are missing ( strainer parts, tone controls, tension rods, double tension lugs, who knows what else?), and I think it's a re-wrap. And, without the rack tom, it doesn't have the value of a full set. I've had a half dozen rocket lug snare drums and never got 400 bucks for one with the issues the CL re-wrap appears to have.
I still think the 3 piece has a value of around 250. Lotsa luck finding the missing parts.
