I say keep the drums!

I wouldn't worry about matching band colours.......the drums, sound & you are more important than that I'd say.

It's good to come onto the Forum and talk all this out and ask questions. And sure, they're only drums. But - they are very beautiful old Ludwig drums.

I would not sell them.......unless I was very desperate for the money.

Alright, Alright. You've convinced my to keep them.

I just fell in love with the snare now that I spent an hour and a half tuning and replacing the snare strands. I found out they were really worn out hence the dry sound. I took them from a newer spare snare in my closet. So if anyone happens to have snare strands from a early late 60's ludwig PM me.:D

What heads will work the best for this set? Right now I have Evans EMAD. With some tuning I think these will sound pretty good but am I going to be missing out? (I like deep WARM sound)

Well here I my new idea since I still want another floor tom I found a 14" and an 18". I really am intrigued by the 18" cause I've never played one before and the one that I found is vintage ludwig (just needs some work). I'm guessing it will go really high though...

14" - http://cgi.ebay.com/Blue-Sparkle-Floor-Tom-14-x-14-project-just-needs-rims-/260623070503?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cae587527

18" - http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-LUDWIG-18-FLOOR-TOM-BASE-DRUM-1970s-BEBOP-NR-/370399704451?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Vintgae_Drums_Percussion&hash=item563d8af583

I would like to wrap whatever i decide to go with to match the rest of my kit. Is this possible?

Well the 14 is a great tom, even this 6 ply lauan will sound acceptable. The 18 is kind of rough, and it is an 82-ish, looks almost like a 4 ply, but not sure, so it may not get too outta hand. If you can grab both, you will be money ahead, if you decide against the 14, let me know, I am going to build a Jazzer next. As soon as I get this jungle kit outta here. I already have the 20-12, need a 14...and they are not easy to come by. 14" floor toms are hens teeth. BTW, what part of the world are you in?

As for the wrap, you can get real close, there are several routes to go, and some are really inexpensive, however, rough environments....maybe not so goods for the lowest cost alternative.

You'll probably spend less for the 14" off-brand one. The 18" is going to be going up before auction's end.

Ply makeup on Ludwigs is not set in stone. I've seen mahogany interiors that were painted, and maple interiors. I heard they used maple/poplar/mahogany, and often it would be either inside, but usually maple. On the maple veneer 3 ply drums they may be mahogany inside. They weren't all maple. The thing is, you need to have several Ludwig drum sets and look at them to be able to see the truth.

I think you could sell them and buy a Mapex Pro M set or something and then go down the road, UNLESS:

You think you may someday realize how cool the drums you have are. If that happens you'll have seller's remorse. The easiest thing to do is to embrace the Gold drums, purchase the bass hoops from mcjnic, and get some heads that make those drums sound the way you want them to for your music.

Extra floor toms may show up, those both don't look that great, spare gold sparkle Ludwig drums do show up on eBay sometimes, if you're patient maybe you'll be able to buy one that matches the set.

What did you expect to hear from us, anyway? The cool thing about vintage drums is they're such a great value. The set probably has a thin tom mount holder, so like Jonni said find a snare stand and put them to the left of the bass, and you have a cool offset tom setup.

Another option is to put out feelers for someone (perhaps a local drum collector in your area) who would like to trade with you. I have a 70s Pearl Fiberglass double bass set that has some fading on the wrap, but this is a monster set, and you could find a similar set locally, that someone would like to trade you for. Tama, Pearl, 70s or 80s era sets are in abundance and if you're careful you could get some nice quality drums in a more conducive color to your head-banging music style (I just interjected that assumption, if I'm wrong, my bad).

You're right to seek expert advice, though. It would certainly be a good idea to check with experts before trading, or before buying a used replacement set.

Here's a cool 15 tenor tom in gold sparkle. Looks to be 6 ply, which would absolutely boom with your other toms. You could most likely contact the seller and make an offer lower than that listed in the buy it now. Add the floor tom legs mounts and some legs ... oh man. Great drum.

Something to keep in mind......

6 ply floor toms would blend with your kit quite well. They boom a bit more and would add an interesting unique tone to the 3 ply setup. If you play heavier music, that would be a plus.

The biggest plus - the 6 ply floors are LOTS cheaper than the 3 ply floors. They are classic Ludwig drums with all the classic Ludwig accoutrements. Good stuff.

Go to ebay and look up Ludwig Gold. Take your time, look it up several times a day, and hope for a low buy it now on a Ludwig gold drum. Or, look up gold sparkle tom. You could find an off-brand drum that matches and is much cheaper. It sounds like you're on a tight budget.
