Leedys in Dallas Last viewed: 3 hours ago

For you Leedy/18-inch bass drum guys, there is a Leedy three-piece on Craigslist in Dallas that might be worth looking into. Seemingly a bit expensive at $2k, but you never know what someone might agree to. They look like black sparkle pearl from the mid-60's. Could be worth a drive for anyone nearby.

Those look mighty cool...$2K worth of cool? probably not. And you'd likely be starting out on a frustrating multi-year long search for a matching floor tom.

If they were closer/cheaper though they look like a mighty nice set.

Some of us are getting a bit older and maybe it will be a pleasure to arrive to the gigs without a floor tom. Falling Do

This was sent to me recently.

Hi Dan....I love that pic of the guy playing at 101yrs old. Apparently a lot of drummers back in the 50's-60's were playing without floor toms. I have a premier kit from 61 with no floor came from a jazz drummer of the day looks great.

I lived in the Dallas metro area for 35 years until recently moving to the Houston metro area. I wonder if I know the seller. I have owned several vintage Leedy drums sets. I've also owned a Slingerland set in that Black Sparkle wrap. Yes...the 18" bass drum is a very attractive feature of this little drum set. The wrap is also an attractive feature. The matching six lug snare drum is going to sound terrific when properly tweaked. The 13" mounted tom seems to be an unusual pairing with the 18" bass drum. But, a 20" or 22" ride cymbal should balance out the weight to keep the bass drum from wanting to fall over to the left. The lack of a floor tom is a big negative. The two grand asking price is a even bigger negative. If the bass drum were a 20" or a 22", top dollar for the three drums would be $1,000. With the 18" bass drum, I would stretch that top dollar estimate to $1,200.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Leedy's from the 60's are not too common. They have great sound. They are Slingerlands for the most part, with a very attractive lug design. I've always like the Slingerleedy rounded over chrome over brass hoops. I've been looking for a set for some time, but haven't found one that fits the bill. This one is billing a bit too high for me, but it is interesting.

My 1963 Black Diamond Pearl Leedy Shelly Manne Set. 14x20, 9x13, 16x16, matching Shelly Manne snare. When I downsized, I sold my other 1963 Shelly Manne Champagne Sparkle set. 14x22, 9x13, 16x16. I kept the Pink Glass Glitter Shelly Manne snare that I used with the Champagne Sparkle set.

Those are real beauties. Where are all the Leedys? They hardly show up. I had these about 5 years ago and sold them (regretfully) when I was getting ready to sell my house in MA. Haven't seen a really interesting set since, though there is one on eBay right now, but it too seems a bit expensive. I got this set from the Drum Farm and the snare from a guy in London.

That's interesting. I traded a Red Satin Flame set to Bobby at Drum Farm several years ago. Like the drums in your picture, the 20" bass drum had 10 lugs per each side. The drums I traded to Bobby had a matching Red Satin Flame Slingerland snare.

I think the Leedy lug design is so classy and I would love to have a set. Not sure why Leedy drums are not in more demand, especially since there are not many available. Because of this, that 18" kick is even more rare.

Re: No floor tom ... Kick/Snare/Hat is all you need, according to my son. He purposefully practices with just those three pieces. I can understand how it makes you get creative with fills.
