I usually play wood snares now. But it does depend on the room:
Quiet: single ply Sound King
Medium: wood Dynasonic
Loud-ish: bronze 552-14 x 6/12
I'm still looking for a super snappy Ludwig metal shell. I have a 402 and a COB but that's not the sound I want. More and more I think the SuperS is the one. Shame they are Super$ too!

I enjoy wood snares too. Other than my RK, my wood drums are newish Yamaha but don't tell anyone here...
As far as snappy, brass seems to be the ticket...at least to me. I love the ring of brass.
I could EASILY get by with just these two for the rest of my drumming life...

For anybody keeping score, the first pic shows a 1941 Ludwig & Ludwig 7X14 maple snare alongside a modern 6.5X14 Black Beauty. The second pic is a 1930's Leedy Reliance 5X14 and the third pic is a Yamaha copper 5.5X14.
I feel confident that I could cover any base with these four drums.

I've played Rogers Dyna wood, AK drums, Craviotto, and many others.
But, I stay with 60's Gretsch 4160 COB, Rogers Powertone COB and Luddy Supra.
I can't live with 4 snares alone. I guess I'll have to stick with 12...I just like too many different things both metal and wood...and I'm easily bored with the same stuff.
