The 9 and 12 ply Sonor Tom Toms are indeed loud when hit hard,...But my 9 ply Concert toms are even louder !!

I think the loudest drums are chrome over vistalite shells. You need earplugs to sit behind those things. Heavy too.

Anything synthetic, including Carbon Fibre, Fibreglass, or Acrylic. Steel is also plenty loud.
