Ludwig 1969-71"Black Panther" toms on.... Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Does anyone have a better pic of the Black Panther. It looks in the tom pics to be a sort of textured fake leather thing. I have a buddy who gave me the Slingys that is an upholsterer. He could probably get vinyl that looks just like that stuff if someone wanted it. I tried to buy the Slingys but he insisted that I take no money. Now I can't find anything that is either the same color or reasonable in price. Capri Pearl is cool but not worth 2 grand to me for a 4 piece kit.

It's not a leather or naugahyde, it's a plastic based material. forum members poppy or L-D can expand on this,

Did they sound bad since they had 2 layers of wrap? Although I am not surprised to hear that I am kinda surprised to hear that at the same time. It seems sort of lazy on Ludwig's part. Isn't Bun E. Carlos's new signature set in Citrus mod? That is a cool color too. I love the Psychedelic Red though.

I wish everyone would stop the myth that every Black Panther has some super rare mystery wrap underneath it. I own about 15 BPs and none of them have citrus mod under them. The BP wrap is so thin, a glance at the bearing edge will show if there is wrap below. I'm afraid everybody will be tearing apart BPs looking for the golden ticket and I may lose out on completing my collection. Stop the insanity!!!!!!

But you were curious enough to check 15 times???? lol! -just yanking your chain! ;) LoLoLoLo

I agree with you that it would be easy enough to check without harming anything, so I certainly understand why anyone would check with all the hoopla surrounding the ultra-rare and in-demand Citrus Mod finish and what recent examples of drums in this finish (Citrus Mod) have sold for. If you check and you don't have a hidden treasure then no harm. If you check and you do....take it from there. Some people prefer BP wrap. Others prefer CM.

I would NEVER advise anyone to rip off an original wrap -even when it's one that I don't particularly like. I just used the "golden ticket" example because that, honestly, is what the whole Citrus Mod under the Black Panther scenario reminds me of.

Most likely not. Why destroy one rare finish to find out if there is an even more rare (and ugly) finish underneath? Lame

Right on Ludwig-Dude,You know some fool will pay alot for these and remove the finish to see then they will have a wood shell drum and destroy a rare finish one...Just a side note in the 1970-74 C.B 700 did the same finish in Black,Red, and Blue....Mikey

I have seen several BP finish 70s drums none of which had Citrus underneath. On the other hand, Citrus Mod is ultra rare. I would have no problem whatsoever removing BP from a Citrus drum. I have found a citrus drum wrapped over with a Mahogany contact paper wrap, and there was an instance where another individual recently found a Citrus Mod drum wrapped with the same substance. So I'm thinking the wood contact paper is more common, probably because it is indeed thinner still than Black Panther wrap.

Black Panther is a classy-looking color by itself though.

Agreed! It is a MYTH, NOT FACT. It may have happened ONCE in the history of Ludwig, so that one time has become fact that every Black Panther finish has another more rare (and ugly) finish underneath??

Nobody on this thread has even come close to suggesting that every BP drum has a rarer finish underneath it. Even if it did only happen once, it still happened and so that's how the story began. Blame Ludwig. Car Driving2

The difference between a Citrus Mod drum and a BP, nowadays, in terms of value, is literally thousands of dollars. Nobody can dispute it, either. That IS a fact, not a rumor. Blame the current collectible vintage drum market.

If it happened once, there were probably other instances of it, too....because that's the way Ludwig did things. Suggesting that it might have happened just once doesn't make sense. What likely happened was that the CM drums didn't sell very well. In an attempt to recoup their marketing mistake, they decided to re-wrap some of the drums. It most certainly would not have been just a one-off occurrence.

IF I were to find such an example, then I would sell the drum as-is, wrapped in the BP with the CM underneath it -like a golden ticket.

as always well and correctly stated!!!,

it really gets em bucked up doesn't it??, I personally like the BP wrap, but it will never be as desirable as CM, yes it's so ugly it's beautiful, but ludwig has reissued the CM and Not the BP due to customer demand, so read O-lugs post it's dead on the mark.
