Ludwig 1969-71"Black Panther" toms on.... Last viewed: 5 minutes ago

I'm with vintagemore.

I really like the BP wrap. In fact would love to get a BP kit. So if anyone has a bunch of Black Panther drums they've acquired in search of the elusive Citrus Mod...let me know...

But it's a love it or leave it thing I guess. Right now I'm playing a Slingerland in the greatly unpopular Chrome over wood, and loving it too...

A good friend in our drum section in high school had a 4 piece BP wrap set. It was a flat black textured wrap. No shine at all. almost like a grain. The only ones I have ever seen or played on. That was 35 years ago.

I wonder if he still has those?

The odd thing is that it's all due to the changing tastes of what is seen as beautiful. One day, it's psychedelic swirled Day-Glo colors; The next day it's flat black. Stick around long enough and everything will change, again. And THAT'S why I, personally, would NEVER peel off a BP wrapped drum that had CM under it. I would merely identify it and sell it for an incredibly high profit margin and let someone else decide what to do with it. :D

The reason why I wouldn't strip off the BP and expose the more-valuable CM wrap, myself, is because the BP-over-CM wrapped drum would be an original factory thing and stripping it off would alter it, making it into something else.

I have seen more than one of these sets that were CM covered in BP. I would definately peel that finish off it CM was underneath. I do like black panther though.

As far as these sets go though, I would be very surprised to see a keystone BP set with CM under it. Both of those colors appeared around mid 1969(BP could have been earlier) and I would think it would take Ludwig a little while to relize that CM was not selling well. I would think that it was not until 1970-71 that Ludwig tried to cover over those finishes. I t would not make sense that Ludwig would cover over a color they just introduced. Just my 2 cents.

Good point, Kurt. On the other hand, Ludwig would have gotten feedback from the amount of orders that were made for a given finish. They were getting LOTS of orders for drums during that timeframe. No orders or few orders would instantly indicate that the psych colors weren't going to catch on. Of course, with Mod Orange, you've got the John Densmore association which helped boost that color a little further. Ludwig did this a few times even in the distant past, too. Mike Curotto has drums with finishes that were only offered for a short time -Lavender Pearl of something...can't remember.

Didn't someone on this very forum stumble onto a black panther over a mod color? I seem to recall some ramblings like that recently.

I'm a huge BP fan and like others have said, in all the BP drums I have, the wrap is quite thin and cemented entirely to the shell. No way to have yet another wrap under it.

I'm pretty sure it has actually been discovered BP wrapped over Citrus.. That being said (since everyone's saying what THEY would do with such a set) I would very painstakingly remove the "offending" (chuckles, just kidding BP freaks) Black Panther wrap so it is intact. Then I'd wait around for a project set of ludwigs and wrap them with the black panther. THat would be my players set, whilst the Citrus set would be just for "special" occasions, or for the chosen few I'd deign to allow a viewing thereof. I'd think I was pretty darn cool then.. ;)
