Smells like rewrap to me..My Canadian homie, Downtownfarmer picked it off with the grommet ! ;) It's a nice wrap though and looks pretty close to the original, only not faded, which would be another indication of it being non original..

Sometimes you can get lucky with non fades. My 60's Red Sparkle keystone toms are in pristine condition. Very minor damage, if any. I was actually shocked at their condition when they were just given to me years ago. I actually saved them from a dump. The 70's silver sparkle bass that came with is also unfaded. I can tell they aren't re wraps from the original grommets. So non fades are out there, though likely on the harder to find side of the scale. Especially snares.

It's easy to tell period correct Oyster Black Pearl...and this wrap is not! I don't even need to see if the wrap goes into the seam.

Pretty close batch of wrap but it does look like the new stuff to me. The swirl pattern is off just a bit, the lighter areas are a bit too silver as opposed to white and you don't see any mahogany showing through. It looks good but if you put it side by side with the real McCoy the difference would be easier to see.

The scarf joint would be the most obvious thing to check out but the grommet is definitely a bit oversized.

Here's a comparison picture. The drum on the bottom is original 60's wrap and the top is a rewrap in the modern "60's" oyster Black.

Yeah, It's hard to explain but easy to see. There's a certain "complexity" in the old wrap that they just haven't been able to duplicate. Even in photos it doesn't come through as well as when the stuff is in front of your eyes.

The 60's version of the wrap that is available now is certainly close and when you do a whole set in it it looks fine and brings to mind the original stuff. Heck, even the bowling ball version looks okay from a few feet away. But when you put the old and the new side by side the difference is there.

I have a Jazzfest I rewrapped myself (the one on top of the picture above) and an original 60's Pioneer (the drum on the bottom) plus another OBP "Jazz festival" that Ludwig produced a couple years ago (supposedly wrapped in a batch of special OBP wrap that they had saved for just such a thing because it was such a good batch, but which, on my drum anyway, isn't as good looking as the drum I did myself). Even with all these options nothing was quite right and I ended up buying an actual OBP Jazzfest a couple years ago for a pretty good chunk of change. I'm happy, it ended a 20 year search and looks mighty nice with my OBP sets.

Exactly! Even when there wasn't much transparency, the white sections had a definite "pearly" look to it that modern wraps haven't been able to duplicate.
