Ludwig Stainless Steel Octaplus Kit Last viewed: 2 seconds ago

From lersch

Oddly enough, a set just showed up on our local Craigslist.....feels like the Twilight Zone:http://springfield.craigslist.org/msg/3830563942.html

That's it. I guess I could have posted the link in the first place but really thought I had at least one customer looking for one and would have a quick flip. As it turned out, I just found out that none of my customers are going to bite, so if anyone else is interested, go for it!

I'd love to have a set like this, but like I said earlier it's just to pricey for me to own and keep. And I am concerned that the market is small enough that if I were to buy (without a buyer already lined up) I'd be sitting on it for a while.

Bill that's a really cool kit. Sorry it didn't work out. Yes that's a good chunk of cash. Time, travel, cleanup for resale a lot of time and money.

Did Ludwig offer the stainless drums in the marching line? I remember seeing rows of concert toms at some point. Ludwig with chrome over wood or stainless finish? Is this where the other smaller kits are made from? Perhaps not if it was a top of the line shell and many schools on budget.

Wow with only 5 Octi kits made that's rare. I think I'd want to have a buyer lined up as well if it was me!! :)

When I was a kid in Jr. High and High School the normal was still the canvas sling over your shoulder. I saw one of the early SS marching drums, hefted it and wondered how long you could go before your shoulder gave out. Our Slingerland Field Drums were bad enough! :)

I can't remember if the SS drum was a snare or tom. Either way I do remember it weighed a ton.

Id buy it but I allready found my configuration,LOL!

Heck, I could never spend that much on a kit. 500 was the most I ever shelled out and that was for a Ludwig oyster blue super classic from the 60's.

I think you should buy it Bill and use up the rest of that peel and stick veneer, lol. NOT!

Thank you!

Now Bill... Jeff's got an idea! You really should buy it, and then fix it up! Rough up that nasty stainless steel with a bench grinder and spray paint it orange. Paint over the badges too! Then, get loads of stickers with the nastiest, gooey, permanent glue you can... stickers all drummers can identify with: dandruff shampoo, anti itch powder, Preparation 'H' and others. Oh! Also, cartoon characters like the 'Power Puff Girls' and the Playboy Bunny...

Now that would be a kit! You betcha!

:) You know, I do still have some of that veneer left. Most of it is unfinished birch (I think).

As for the Stainless Steel marching drums, yes, Ludwig came out with them sometime in the 60s. I've actually handled quite a few of these in the past, most with keystone badges. The ones I've had have tended to be pretty beat up, as school kids typically don't take real good care of them.

IF anyone is interested, I've got several shells either in the garage or in the storage shed. Several 12x15 shells (most with badges still untouched), and I do have some single-headed marching toms (14, 16, 18 x 10s). The toms are definitely Ludwig, but no badges or breather holes. I guess since they didn't have bottom heads the honchos didn't think they needed the holes???

I've also got a COW 24" BD, and had thought about putting an interesting set together with it and the marching toms... oh well. My mind works kinda funny sometimes...

I marched for three years with a 12x15 stainless steel Ludwig. I can attest that they were indeed heavy.
